How to show a Wedding date

Except in the Windows version ‘use symbols’ is not the default. Until I read this topic I didn’t know of the existence of this tab in Preferences so my screen shot shows how the Windows version installs out-of-the-box and use symbols is not ticked.

I forget which setting is default or not.

But… you admit that your preferences Use symbols is Not ticked… which means you are using the settings in the lower portion of the tab Genealogical Symbols. These settings can be changed to anything you want them to be. For myself, I set them all to word settings. I figured why use symbols when I untick the Use symbols option.

If you do tick the box Use symbols, Gramps will use the overlapping rings as its wedding symbol.

My Use Symbols unticked

Yes, I understand all this.

I only stuck my nose into this topic because @emyoulation didn’t seem to know about this ‘two rings separated’ symbol and @Nick-Hall didn’t seem able to help either. My assumption was that as users of the Linux version they were unfamiliar with this subtlety in the Windows version. As @Joop seems to have dropped out of this topic (even though they started it) I was just trying to help.

Confirming that the default is “Use symbols” unchecked on Windows.

And it is interesting how the behavior varies. Thanks for jumping in.

Like all the other people posting, my Linux preferences was unticked for using symbols. But it still shows ⚭ for either option, never showed the text “Marriage:” (And a Text label would be nice.)

Tamura Jones lists:

meaning symbol Windows ANSI
code point(s)
name
married oo 6F 6F Latin Small Letter O, Latin Small Letter O

With Use symbols unticked users can make them be or say anything!!!

Thanks for helping out.

If it is a marriage symbol, then it implies that the date if the marriage event is empty. A text-only date would display the text.

I can see how that makes sense but that’s not how Gramps uses this oo symbol. For me, using the Windows version AND regardless of whether or not a marriage event has a date:

  • Gramps displays the oo symbol when 'use symbols is not ticked
  • Gramps displays the ⚭ symbol when ‘use symbols’ is ticked

It’s no big deal for me, I’m not a ‘real’ genealogist, I’m only playing with Gramps.

Perhaps @Joop can clarify the problem. As far as I can tell, the marriage symbol is visible, but the date is not.

We need to know if the date has actually been entered correctly.

I had tweaks in my Gramps.ini file. They must be leftover from long, long ago.

[utf8]
baptism-symbol='⊛'
;;birth-symbol='*'
buried-symbol='⚰'
;;cremated-symbol='⚱'
dead-symbol='☠'
;;death-symbol=2
divorce-symbol='⚮'
;;engaged-symbol='o'
in-use=1
;;killed-symbol='x'
marriage-symbol='⚭'
;;partner-symbol='o-o'
;;selected-font=''

The text substitutions for Genealogical Symbol defaults have the Marriage symbol I was missing. They are:

[utf8]
;;baptism-symbol='~'
;;birth-symbol='*'
;;buried-symbol='[]'
;;cremated-symbol='⚱'
;;dead-symbol='✝'
;;death-symbol=2
;;divorce-symbol='o|o'
;;engaged-symbol='o'
;;in-use=0
;;killed-symbol='x'
;;marriage-symbol='oo'
;;partner-symbol='o-o'
;;selected-font=''

Perhaps one of your ancestors made these tweaks?

:grinning:

The first time I saw the tilde was a default for baptism-symbol, it was immediately off-putting. In most genealogies I’ve seen, the tilde has represented a date approximation. And I just read a posting that says it is used in ranges in France. (e.g., “1850~1890”   similarly to the US variant “1850-1890” )

Maybe the double tilde (" ≈ ") has fewer conflicts?

~ is not limited to dates and I have seen it used with other units of
measurement. I thought it was universally accepted as approximately
In GRAMPS I use ~ also < > as approximate before and after for dates
between >< I tried tilde here but was not convinced.
In fact I would happily turn off all Symbols.

That’s the purpose of the text fields in that Preferences tab. You can put in words (or abbreviations, like “d.” for death or “div.” for divorced) for where symbols exist by default.

I am still a bit… tentative… about trusting those overrides.

As a further complication here, was this a relatively recent innovation? I am still on gramps AIO64 5.1.4-1 for production, on Win10pro. The option to turn on the “Use symbols” option on the Genealogical Symbols tab of Preferences is there, but cannot be selected. It may help to be explicit about which versions enable this.Or are there other permutations & combinations of settings a user has to have tweaked in order to access this?
The other thing that might benefit from a bit more explanation is that as far as I understand it, this issue really only applies to the chart view within gramps itself. Generating charts via Reports > Graphical reports has for a long time given the user a reasonable degree of control over what does or does not appear on the chart, even if it often helps to undertake post-processing to further format the output in text &/r SVG editors.

I have thought of that Brian but that is just yet another thing that has
to be setup after every upgrade I would rather have an off button for
Symbols than set up my preferences each time
So the Tab should be Symbols not Genealogical Symbols
Options Mutually exclusive
Symbols Use
Genealogical Symbols Use.

Thank you all very much, it is clear to me in any case, my question has been completely solved, but I still have something small, the letters are so small but I can’t find anything anywhere where I can make them bigger (change a font or something like that).

There is the Themes addon. When installed it will add a tab to Preferences. With it you can change your font and its size. A more advanced feature allows you to change the actual theme. There are a few already installed themes but you can download and manually install other GTK themes

There is another thread discussing Modifying Themes.

The conversation took place before Nick added a css layer for the ‘lozenges’ of the Addon Manager. So it probably needs to be revived.
