Easiest way to link trees together

I’m using GrampsWeb only on a Synology NAS docker container (Q: Do I need to install Gramps as well, or is using Grampsweb sufficient?).

Seems to work fine, after having imported a GEDCOM file from MyHeritageDOT com.

However, I am confused about how to reference the MyHeritage.com tree using GrampsWeb. Basically I wish to point one of the GrampsWeb person entries to the MyHeritage DOT com tree for those interested in exploring a separate branch of the overarching family tree.

Is there a recommendation for the best way to do that? Perhaps a reference link URI to the MyHeritage tree?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This actually a general Gramps question and not just Gramps Web. There are several possiblities, I think the most straightforward one would be to add a URL to the person (which is possible in Gramps Desktop and Web). You could even add a custom URL type “MyHeritage” if you like.

Let me turn the question around and ask what you would find natural, as a user?

Hi @DavidMStraub: Thanks! I guess adding the URL will work just fine. No need to overcomplicate things.

I had a hidden question in my original post - is it necessary for me to install Gramps? At present all I have is GrampsWeb.

Thanks!

From experience with the Web Connect addons, we know all the services change their their URL pattern (usually without notice or forwarding) and saved URLs are likely to rot quickly.

It would be better if we had a way to store the URL parameter passing pattern with the source. (Or the maybe in the Repository call number?) Then use the citation for storing the date it was scraped and the volume/page for the UUID parameter.

Then, when the service changes their system, you only have to add a new base URL… not update hundreds (or thousands) of rotted Citations.

Perhaps the URL pattern in Sources could even have a date range like Place and Person names?

Good question! You don’t have to install Gramps - but it’s definitely worth trying out, and good to know you always have the option to switch to desktop if you wanted. There are some things that are only possible on desktop (various addons, bulk editing, …).

It’s also always good to get feedback on usability of Gramps Web from somebody who builds a new tree with Gramps Web. I myself for instance started Gramps Web after having used Gramps Desktop for 15+ years and already with a very big tree. We’re aware e.g. that the workflow for entering new data can sometimes be clumsy on Gramps Web.

Thanks @DavidMStraub. I will try Gramps in a VM on my Synology NAS (I assume there are clear instructions how GrampsWeb can point to the Gramps instance since I would want to maintain just one database and not be forced into cloning it).

I noticed that the process for entering new persons/families using GrampsWeb is a bit clumsy. I’ve use MyHeritage and their UI is very intuitive - on the visual tree map each entry has a “+” sign to add new related information (partner/spouse, children, etc.). So far I’ve taken to entering new data in MyHeritage and then importing the resulting GEDCOM into GrampsWeb, but I can see how that will eventually get more painful than I hoped.

I know you guys are working hard to make the UI more functional and am waiting to try out new features.

Thanks!
