Total crash no files found

had a freeze, totall and completely. couldn’t even halt the process or switch to desktop or anything else. Had to restart the pc by switching it off and on again
After restart gramps opened like it was a new install with the welcome screens. Now all my file references are gone. How do I get them back?
AIO64-6.0.8–1

You may have lost the gramps.ini file during the crash. Gramps would automatically create a new one with all defalt settings. Open Preferences, Family Tree tab and make sure the database location is set to the folder on the hard drive

From that, I would guess that crash occurred while writing the gramp.ini file. It might have been corrupted.

  1. Quit Gramps
  2. Go to your Gramps User Directory
  3. make a backup copy of the gramp.ini file
  4. in the gramps.ini, delete all the chunks except [behavior] [database] [paths] [plugin]

Try restarting Gramps to see if the Trees are back.

(If so, you might want to open the backup copy and see if there are some settings from the [preferences], [researcher] or [utf8] that you want to restore manually.)

OK got it working again. Preferences were shot, need to figure some stuff I’ve done out again.
Like moving around the colums in person editor? [Like ID first, how did do that?]
Lost some work bc I had the same person open for a while. But its minor.

If you made a backup of the ini file, a good next step would be to compare the new ini file against the old one to see what the differences are. This may give a clue.

OK. My current Gramps User Directory has stayed out of my automated backups. Just never thought about including the path.
I will add it now.
It could be a feature request. ‘Make backup of the gramps.ini file.’
Like the backup of the database.

I manually backup my media files to an external hard drive. At the same time, I do the same for my user files’ version directory containing all the ini files and the custom_filters.xml file. The report files are another set of files worthy of backup. They contain the settings of the various reports you use.

We learn the hard way, right. Since my backup couldn’t add hidden folder i added a robocopy to my system startup.

I have set the environment variable GRAMPSHOME to c:\users\dave\Genealogy. This puts the gramps user folder in the same location for any and all of my genealogy files. I pin this folder to the explorer Quick Access list.
