using All In One Bundle (64-bit) 5.1.5 on Windows 10
Am I able to undo the actions of uninstall.exe? If not, could a developer please give me more info. on how it works / what it does exactly so I may further troubleshoot my issue?
My friend installed Gramps on her desktop, not expecting the installation to result in several other files/directories being placed on her desktop. She ran uninstall.exe with the intention of reinstalling Gramps in the default/suggested location afterwards.
Running uninstall.exe (which was located on her desktop) deleted everything on her desktop, including many preexisting files/directories that are unrelated to Gramps.
I have been trying to recover those files/directories but no luck so far. I’ve tried a System Restore, and using Recuva.
Sorry I don’t believe my answer to be that useful for your friend file recovery, good luck with that
The Gramps installer does exactly what it is told once the default folder locations are overridden; especially if your friend did not use or create a subfolder on the desktop to install into, this would happen with any program so not specifically a program issue more of a user choice!
The uninstaller behavior is a Windows OS feature, not under Gramps control. When your friend changed the default destination folder, they eliminated what little safeguard was in our control.
For recovery options, you’ll need to use a forum that is about Microsoft’s tool. Here’s a starting point:
The AIO uninstaller works by deleting all files in the Gramps install directory (normally “C:\Program Files\GrampsAIO64-5.1.4”). It then deletes (or tries to) the actual subdirectory. These deletes are permanent, not to the recycle bin.
If your friend overrode the install directory to the desktop and then used the uninstaller, I’m not sure there is a way to fix this. On some windows versions, there is a right click “Restore previous Versions” but I think this depends on the system restore (save) having been run.
