Replicating and Running Gramps on 2nd PC

[Gramps v5.2.2 on Win10 Home]

I’d like to install and run Gramps on my laptop in addition to my desktop.

Is there a convenient way to replicate my current selection of add-ons, my settings for Gramps & the add-ons, and the tree databases – like simply copying some program add-on folders, and user-data folders containing .ini and tree database files?

TIA.

Copy the Gramps User Directory from the original machine to the 2nd system. That will include the addons, INIs.

If your Database folder in that folder, it will convey a clone of the Trees too. (It is a royal pain to keep the tree harmonized between 2 machines. You have to be VERY structured to avoid having them out of sync.)

Note that the Windows User Directory moved from the %AppData% folder to the %LocalAppData% folder. If you upgraded from 5.1.x, then even in 5.2.x it will remain in the old location. Fresh installs go to that new “local” location. (You should keep both machines using the destination path.)

A simpler way so long as both computers are windows 10 is to consider is using the portable apps version of Gramps on an external portable device like a SSD it will save you the issue of synchronizing between the two PC’s.

In either case make sure to make backups to another device.

Can I move gramps on my current PC to the new “local” (for consistency between the two instances) by simply uninstalling the 5.2.2 upgrade, manually moving the gramps folder from old “local” to new “local”, then re-installing 5.2.2?

No. The Gramps User Directory is not part of the Installation… so it is not affected by Uninstall.

That folder (and its content) is GENERATED when you do certain things with Gramps. (Such as adding trees, installing ADDONS, configuring Gramps views and reports, adding Custom Filters, spelling dictionaries, et cetera.) In particular, before generating the folder in the new location, the Gramps looks for instances of the gramps.ini settings file before deciding where to install the new folder and settings file.

That’s why a problems with the GUI configuration can persist through an uninstall and re-install cycle.

You could use the GRAMPSHOME setting to specify where your user folders are created.

I had set GRAMPSHOME on a shared computer to c:\Users\Public\Genealogy so all profiles on the computer would have the same Gramps setup. Even though the computer is no longer shared, I have not altered GRAMPSHOME. When a new computer becomes necessary, I would still keep the same setting.

This puts the user folders in the same directory that I have my Media folder as well as any other research, backup, etc folder in the same master Genealogy folder.

Of course, you could set any other folder and make them consistent on both machines. GRAMPSHOME does need to be set before you install Gramps.
