Print all notes

GRAMPS: AIO64-5.1.6-1 . Windows 11-Current.

I have my mother’s Gedcom file from 1999.
…imported into Gramps and found “NOTES” I never new existed.
…have managed to get to the preview list of “Notes” where each is listed individually.
QUESTION:
Is there any other way than individually to read and print these? I’d like a single file of .txt or even a .pdf that has the contents of each note…compiled in a stack of notes in one file.

Possible?

I appreciate your advice.

Welcome!

There is the addon ToDo Report. It actually works off a Tag that you can attach to desired Notes. It can be printed to a PDF saving a tree of paper.

The report gives you the Note’s Gramps ID then the text of the note. Below this entry will be the ID of the object that is using the note.

Now to tag the notes.

In the Notes view’s list of records, you can select all or batches of notes. On the tool bar there will be Tag icon. 22x22-gramps-tag If the tag already exists you can select it or create it at that time. I use a tag named “Print”. All selected records receive the tag.

Then it becomes simple to select for the tag in the report options. I suggest you use the option Group by reference type. Then print.

Thanks Dave…but I’m stuck on the first step.
I need to find the add-on manager to add ToDoReport…but CAN’T FIND IT.

(Later)
Wait…may be making progress…

You are using a 5.1.x version of Gramps and the Addon Manager is a new Gramps 5.2 evolution of the Third party addons management, formerly found in the 5.1 Preferences.

See the introductory paragraph of the 5.1 Addons page for more info about using the Preferences (for installing add-on plug-ins) and the Help menu’s Plugin Manager (for managing already installed plug-ins).

Oh my. my
I think I have them.
Over a thousand.
Thanks for your help, Dave

I was going to say that I have a variation on the Note Link Report which can print all Notes with type, attributes and Privacy. But if you are sorted then I will not bovver.

A new report variation is always welcome. Do you have it somewhere that we access it?

I do not understand what this means:
“But if you are sorted then I will not bovver.”

British idiom/slang.

It your problem is resolved, then he won’t pursue presenting another solution.

Sorry, my London accent, it should have been ‘bother’.

Not really. But I could probably do something next week. It isn’t fully tested.

Where Gramps can’t recognize a GEDCOM line, it creates a Note with the data and a Type of “GEDCOM Import”. If your source file is 25 years old, perhaps you had a number of such issues? Do you know what software your mother was using?

Craig

Lastest Update:
The original 1999 gedcom was produced by the 9th version of Family Tree Maker. That is the program I still, occasionally, open it in as it is EXACTLY the way my mother left it…(the errors are like flaws in fine leather…nevermind).
The import into Gramps was kind of a “Hail Mary” and I was amazed to find the notes. Interestingly, the first note I saw detailed my mother’s father’s life and I was gullible enough to think I hit the jackpot on that level of detail for everyone in the whole tree.
Not so much.
Gramps, in fact, does not “translate” a lot of the info I have since learned is contained in the gedcom.
I had to “acquire” Family Tree Maker 2005 to advance my progress one-step.
Again, I was stuck with accessing notes one at a time, by name with a lot of these:
“Line ignored as not understood”
and “Skipped subordinate line”.
huh?

It was suggested by one of the responders to this thread that I (simply) upgrade to a newer FTM. Y’Think? (let me pick the dust bunnies out of my wallet).

If what I read about the “Ahnentafel Report” is true, it should do exactly what I need.
So, I will collect my pennies until I count the 7900 I need for Family Tree Maker XXXX.
Thanks for letting me rant.
Kevin

Notes, such as the above, are GEDCOM import warnings from Gramps. The GEDCOM file format only facilitates transferring relatively basic family history data. Many software programs, like Family Tree Maker, tried to include extra data that never conformed to the GEDCOM standard. Gramps has stored the ‘extra’ information from your mother’s GEDCOM file into a textual note as a last resort. See the section “GEDCOM import report dialog” for a little for detail:

https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Gramps_5.2_Wiki_Manual_-_Manage_Family_Trees#GEDCOM_import

You need to look at the notes and decide what to do. Is the noted information important? How many cases are there? Can you manually fix the important problems in Gramps? Or does purchasing the new version of FTM save you enough effort to make the expense worthwhile?

You are using the Notes view, right? The “Type” field will make it apparent which notes your mother entered v. the notes created during the GEDCOM import. (Click on the top of the column to sort.) Double click on any line to open the full note.

Pro tip: use the Text Filter to determine how frequently a GEDCOM problem occurred. For example, I imported a file once containing 'ITALIC" tags. AIUI, it literally just meant that some text was to be displayed in italics and was thus trivial to me. By filtering for ‘italic’ (caps don’t matter), I could see that 8 of the import errors included this tag. Etc.

Pro tip 2: the Notes view can be exported to a spreadsheet. This would let you print a report of all the notes in the database or let you sort and manipulate the list of notes in various ways. Under the “Family Trees” menu, see the entry “Export view…”. Unfortunately, it only includes the preview text of each Note; not the full text.

HTH,

Craig

I was asked to share my Note Report. I have raised a ‘bug report’ 0013309 and uploaded the .py and the .gpr.py files.

I am still on 5v1 gramps so you will need to edit the gramps version in the .gpr.py file to suit your version. No other changes should be necessary. You will need to be on Python 3.

I’ve tested what I can. The .py file is documented so you should be able to fix any faults but if not then email me and I will do my best to fix any problems you have. If it is useful and worth publishing then please do so with my blessing.

If you do fix a fault, update bug report.

Craig,
I can’t thank you enough for your educational response. A lot of it is flying over my head, but I persevere. I do have a couple more direct questions of you’re up for it?
Kevin

@Korotvicka

I’d be glad to try! If you can, please include screen captures from Gramps. Trying to use text to describe a problem in a graphical user interface can be very difficult.

Craig

Try This

Works like a charm in v5.2. It is difficult to use it when you have 22500 notes. The report is 8000 pages only for events notes.

That’s why it can use a filter.
