Linux Gramps 4.2.8 backup disabled

I got a new problem today that I hope you can hep with.

All of a sudden Gramps refuses to “Make Backup”.

I’ve played around making some changes to filenames and paths but to no avail.

All help gratefully received…

Allan

A scan of others with a backup issue was a bad gramps.ini file. You can go into your user folder’s gramps42 directory and delete rename or move gramps.ini and try again.

Delete Rename gramps.ini while Gramps is closed. A new .ini file will be automatically recreated when you restart Gramps.

The gramps.ini contains all of your Preference settings so you may wish to review any of your settings. The new gramps.ini will reset everything to the default settings.

If this does not solve the issue you can restore (while Gramps is closed) your previous file. Either way, let us know your results.

Please rename rather than Delete. With rename, you have the option to restore.

Also, if your Gramps was upgraded rather than installed fresh, the settings from the previous version will be imported and upgraded anythime there is no .gramps.ini file found in the current version’s subdirectory in the Gramps User Directory.

And if renaming the ini file resolves the issue, then we would have something to investigate by doing a diff between that and the current one.

Got "re-name message"too late I’m afraid.

However deleting the .ini file DID allow a back up. So thank you for that.

However it apparently netted me two new problems. It tells me the OsmGpsMap module has not been able to be loaded nor has the GExiv2 module.

If I was smarter I might know whether this was a catastrophe or could readily be ignored.

Does Linux not have a trash can that can restore files?

Depends on how the delete was done. Many Linux users use the Terminal instead of the GUI. Where there is no Trash safety net.

So, does anyone know if I have a problem with the OsmGpsMap module and the GExiv2 module being AWOL? Or can/should I just ignore it?

If you don’t use the Geography view or manage Exif metadata embedded in your media you should be ok to go. But if you do it may be better to mention the Distribution of Linux you are using and show the exact error message , but if you really are on using Gramps 4.2.8 which is unsupported; it is strongly recommended to backup and upgrade to Gramps 5.2.3

Not having used a 4.2.x version for such a long time, I was looking for resolution documentation in the wiki.

Those are specifically noted in the Error and Warning Reference section of the wiki.
Unfortunately, that section lacks links to discussions or resolutions.
In other version 4.x discussions, the OsmGpsMap modules is listed as a prerequisite for the Geography view.

Both are also listed in the Prerequisites Checker gramplet addon for the Dashboard

Did you see this page that have sections for both OsmGpsMap for Geography and GExiv2 for Image metadata?

GEPS 029: GTK3-GObject introspection Conversion

I did not see those. Thanks. Was not considering GEPS pages.

Still, that page is a bit unclear. GEPS 29 was marked as implemented for Gramps 4.0 … but what does that mean for the items within the GEPS? The GEPS tend to be written to describe how unsatisfactory workflows can be Enhanced, not how the new workflow operates.
