Gramps Internal Links - what are they good for?

In NOTES it is possible to create External Links to the Internet.
It is also possible to create Internal links to Objects within the database.

My question is what can you do with these internal links ?

They are very useful in the Narrative web. Link people in an obituary and you can jump to their page. Or to an external web page.

Within Gramps you need to right-click and it will open the particular edit window or out to the web.

Are there any dangers with using internal links? For example, if an internal link references an object that later gets deleted?

Thanks Dave, you should write it up on the Wiki.
George

The main danger is that the object referenced by the link is not included in the filter for the narrated web build.

I try to include an “Infamous Cousins” page with links to any noteworthy cousins I have found. When creating a specific branch tree not all of the cousins are included. They display as underlined entries that are not clickable. Now I pare this list of cousins down specific to the branch.

The same would occur for any deleted object which by definition would not be included in the build’s filter. But I am not too worried about deleting the object referenced by a link. Things and people linked would be items germane to the family and as such not likely to be deleted.

Now I remember what I was thinking of as a potential danger. If the only reference to an object is an internal link in a Note, then I think that object will show up in the Removed Unused Objects tool. But I suppose that’s unlikely to happen.

I have a person record with the name “Anchor, Do Not Delete”. There are Note and Media records that I use building the Narrative Web. I attach them to Mr Anchor so they never show up for deletion.

Made a change to the Link Editor wiki.

@emyoulation is a wiki guru, any recommendations?

FOUR may be too many ‘Tips’ for such a short section. (The ‘HTML links’ tip immediately above the Link Editor section is mispositioned. It also belongs within the Link Editor section.) Certainly 2 Tips being immediately adjacent reduces the chance of the 2nd being read.

So many tips indicates the feature is either idiosyncratic or full of easter eggs.

It might be nice to see a separate ‘How do I …’ template-based tutorial page linked from a ‘See also’ subsection.

(Personally, I’m still flummoxed by what criteria the linking feature uses to decide what category to guess the user intends to link. If that criteria was clearer, users might be able to preempt drilling down through an extra ‘Select object’ dialog when linking. Although the uncertainty is more about the Category… one assumes it guesses the active record in whichever category.)

Made a major change to the Link Editor wiki and the entire Note Editor section.

One of the problems was there was a lot of information about Note tabs (that appear in other objects) when the wiki page should have been only about the Note Editor window.

I can revert back to the old markup. Made sure to save the old version.

Dave, Can I point out that it is possible to add the same link multiple times to the same note. This is not detrimental (it all still works) but very untidy. The only remedial action available is to delete All links and re-input those required. This sweep clean (see Brush Icon) is only available in the Note Link Editor.

Edit
Ahha found it in the Note Editor

Yes. A link is a link and Gramps, or here, does not care. I am also clearing links from notes like obituaries that link to people that also naturally appear on the person’s web page.

At least making the links to other objects in Gramps is not a simple task. Searching for the correct object is not easy especially on a large database. If were possible to d-n-d into the link editor, it would be so much easier.

The Clear Markup icon only works on selected text. It would be possible to clear the second and third links in a note leaving other links in place.
