Saving a Family Tree write up in Gramps

I am running Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia and Gramps 5.1.5. I have used Gramps (5.1.5) for some time and have four or five active trees.

I use the Note facility in the Person view to add a written biography and short ‘immediate’ family resume for selected individuals.

I am now writing up a more extensive report on the broader family tree: obviously, this will incorporate references to many of the individuals and families in the tree. Is there a suitable place within the Gramps Software to save such a document?

Thank you.

Tim

You can create a note record that is not attached to another object. The main thing to be aware of, if you run the Remove Unused Objects tool the note will be added to the list for deletion.

The Narrative Web uses such notes. To keep these notes from deletion, I created a dummy person record that holds these notes. I named the record [Hold Do Not Delete].

The tool will not remove unused notes of type “Link” (even if they don’t actually contain any links).

However, it will remove unused notes that contain links, if they are not of type “Link”.

In other words, the tool relies on the note type rather than the content to determine whether it contains links.

Notes with the “To Do” type are also ignored by the Remove Unused Objects tool.

Somehow I did not think @Timbo would use these specialized options for his note type.

Thank you for the responses.

Following the advice I have set up a ‘fake’ person with given name Write-up. I have added my comprehensive narrative about the family to the note facility there. I will continue to add individual notes (write-ups) to the relevant person records.

If this is a sensible way to proceed I will mark my post as solved?

Thank you

Tim

I set up a fake person with the name SURNAME for each of my major family names and attached history, geography, notes, links, etc. It’s a convenient way of organising and reporting the stuff

Thank you all for the help. Much appreciated by this senior citizen.

If I can discern how to mark the topic solved I will do so.
