Someone just gave me an old Genbox database, the Genbox software and a Linux virtual machine so I can run it on my Mac. I know zero about Genbox (and realize I should export it all to another software) but for the moment want to just get familiar with what’s in the database. QUESTION: When I try to run any report, it tells me I can’t run it without a default printer. Could someone tell me how to assign a default printer? Thanks very much!
Why are you asking a question about Genbox on a Gramps support forum? They aren’t the same.
Here’s their site:
I’m well aware. I wrote because I saw two other fairly recent Genbox-related posts and there does not seem to be any other place online where anyone has posted about Genbox in years. (The website link you provided is ancient, so no help there). So I thought the couple of people who posted on Gramps in the past couple of years instead of 15 years ago might be kind enough to help.
Those questions are about importing the GEDCOMs created by Genbox for use in Gramps.
They aren’t about configuring their software. Besides, you are asking a question about configuring a Windoze software default for a Linux virtual machine on a Mac. Even if the person who asked (a year and half ago) about importing Genbox data is still monitoring the forum. They were using Windows OS and are unlikely to know about that virtual machine.
Please try asking questions about configuring printer defaults in a Forum for that linux vm.
My question is a simple one about assigning a default printer to Genbox; it has nothing to do with Linux or virtual machines. If I could send a private message to the forum person who is familiar with Genbox, I would have. And Windows is not spelled Windoze. Sorry my question annoys you so much.
I use Windoze to differentiate between the OS and the GUI element. Everyone realizes Windoze must a derogatory reference to the OS. It saves constant clarifications. I’ve been using that and mockOS
(and its devolved antecedents) since the 80286 and 68000 processors. So It isn’t an outsider prejudice. Don’t be so sensitive.
And your question IS about setting an OS printer in the VM. Windoze applications inherit from the OS setting.
If you have so much time to write about how knowledgable you are, it would have been kind to take two seconds to answer a simple question whether relevant or not. Not going to respond further, it wastes everyone’s time.
I don’t have that answer. And don’t expect others here will either. (Particularly since you didn’t state WHICH vm you were using.)
But I still provided a suggestion for where you are likely get an answer.
Instead of taking a suggestion as constructive, you choose to be offended. And assume someone is deliberately withholding help. You have strange expectations.
Do you actually mean a “Windows virtual machine” as the Genbox software is meant for windows? If so what version of Windows is the virtual machine running?
For Windows 10 and 11 you could install the default PDF printer and see if that is enough for the Genbox reports to work?

Assuming your virtual machine is using Window I suggest trying the following for Windows 10 or 11

Makes total sense, will try that. Thanks for your help, very much appreciated!!
