Many thanks for that info Dave as indicated I only use GRAMPS as an organizational tool. My granddaughter asked me a couple of years ago about my family and I had to tell her that I knew very little about that. My parents bounced from pillar to post throughout my life so we lived more or less out of a box, we moved once or twice a year not in the military but just moved.
As I was challenged my my father before he died and dared to find his mother that is what got me on this kick. Finding gramps and filling in the blanks helps to keep me organized and using the forms (census) held me to see what kinds of occupations the family did. Finding his parents infold censuses in Norway surely an eye opener.
Anyway I do agree the easiest way to begin is to experiment as I have been doing to see how things play out in each person. By the way do you use Ancestry as a source? I ma a bit curious about how they keep track of common names such as mine and your in fact. Thanks again for your insight. JNELSON
Jnelson,
I use Ancestry, Find My Past and Family Search for my research. Much of the family comes from the UK. I have a full tree of over 16,000 persons on Ancestry with just over 6,000 persons in GRAMPS. Ancestry is my prime resource currently just because I like the interface. I did start a tree on FMP but have given up on that as I donāt like the GUI as much. I use FMP to supplement the research and also FS. When info is lacking on one I usually find info on the other. I donāt have a tree on FS.
Ancestry has a high error rate if you look at other trees that are presented. However, although it may look like an error it could also be a clue to breaking a brick wall. Having a tree on Ancestry and following the hints saves a lot of work. Yes, FS has lots of data but they are hard to link together without a reference point.
The biggest challenge is keeping your research close to the trunk of the tree. It is easy to stray to the 3 cousin 6x removed. I find the End of Line Report a good tool to keep your research tight. My average is to source about 100 people a month, so I have about 100 months of work ahead of me currently.

Dave
I was interested in your comment about End of Line Report
I had a note from years ago saying it was of no use to me
So I used it again to find out why I wrote the note to myself
So I did it based on my grandson
So Generation 6 stops with my G grandfather (who was illegitimate) which
I would say is not the stop point
Generation 8 then includes my gg grandmother and ggg grandfather which I
would say is not the stop point either
Generation 10 then produces the true end of line of my ggggg grandfather
In my view the first time my male line should have appeared was in
Generation 10
Illegitimacy and Incest are obviously not catered for

My interpretation of the report use is that it shows you where a connection stops with the individual listed. I use it to workon filling holes in the tree. The problem is always that there are no parents listed for the reported person. I always start with myself or my wife, but you could also choose anyone close to you, like a daughter-in-law.
Good afternoon Dave;
What I have tried to do is place a marker of some sort in each of the tabs in āPEOPLEā category for example I use FS exclusively, so on the note tab I use this to place the LDS-ID there so I can always refer to it and find any information available. What I donāt know is how the media works as I have screenshots of Census and a few pictures to include. I guess the question is If I place a screenshot in the gallery does it follow on every other category or just the one it is included in. I have to read through the instructions and try to follow them step by step. Thank you JNELSON
You save your screen shot as a jpg in your media folder on your computer. Then in the gallery folder for the person it is associated you select the image you just saved. You add info too, and also crop the image if needed. That image can be used in other profiles but you have to add it to each profile.
Good morning Dave;
On my computer (Mac Air 13) when I go to the chart category there is a data entry form, is there a way to customize that so I could include a form such as draft registration cards? That would really be trick if that were connected to the events. Thanks JNELSON
You can add gramplets to the right pane area. I have Data Entry gramplet as well as Filter and Forms in my view for the Person category, for instance.
If you added the Forms gramplet to the right pane, then the New and Edit functions would be on the bottom of that pane. Is that what you are asking?
Or are you asking for the entry fields for a form be available in the right pane rather than a separate window? That would be a lot of real estate for that pane, assuming you could specify which form you wanted.
Jnelson
I donāt use forms because they use Attributes and these are not included in gedcom files which I use often for uploading to other sites.
After creating the event, when creating the Source/Citation I copy the transcribed data into a note of the citation. Most of my data entry is with the use of cut/paste, manual data input is kept to a minimum.
Thank you Dave I thin I may have found something I will try in the future it was found in the obscure documents deep in the wiki. I will try a few things and I will let you know if you are interested. JNELSON
Good day Dave;
I have been playing around and only used 3 relatives all of the same family and when I tried to copy from the clipboard and the event (1910) census when I copy it in the clipboard it says āevent refā and will not copy to the event o the person I want it to. If you think I do not know about the categories in gramps you would correct. I am new to this and want to know all there is to know about the program. This is just a hobby but I want to try and understand where everything goes and having Norwegian ancestors and trying to keep them straight is challenging. Any help (hand holding) would be much appreciated. I have read much of the manual and watched the videos and I am more confused. Thank you JNELSON
Jnelson,
It is a little tricky. If you copy an event to the clipboard you have to copy it back to where events are listed. This also goes for source/citation. If you donāt target the right window they will not copy to the new record.
Try opening two People, one with a Census record for example. Now click and drag that record from person A and drop the record in person B.
Try the same thing but for person B try dropping it into the Source window section.
Gramps will not copy a record into the wrong section.
Just a quick update as it relates to the clip board. I thought I could just move over the top of the heading (EVENT) or whatever not true must drop on the area under the heading and it will drop very nicely. Thank you for your info. JNELSON
