Gramps 5.1.6 Mac OS Sonoma Version 14.1.2
I have just started with a new database with only 1 person in it with 6 sources 4 of which are censuses. When I use the forms gramplet, following the video I have edited the source per video and the list does not produce the source as expected in the source window.
What am I doing wrong? I have started over many times over the past year or so and am becoming very frustrated.
Thank you for any help you might supply. JNELSON
Welcome
In the Source record, you need to add an Attribute.
For the U.S. 1950 Census it would be
Type: Form
Value: US1950
Before using the form addons, you need to define the form that describes the information contained within a source.
To do this you need to edit each Source and add an entry in the “Attributes” tab. The entry must have a key of “Form
” and a value which is a Code that uniquely identifies the form to be used eg: UK1841
I have followed the directions via TimG video and that did not work as expected, in fact one of the censuses is a 1905 Wisconsin Census. Is it possible that the terminology in the Census a problem? The source I used is “United States Census, 1910”.
The 1905 Wisconsin census would be WI1905
and the 1910 United States US1910
Tables of available Form Definitions.
I use both the WI 1905 and the US 1910. Here is a snap of the Sources. The Census info (Title, Pub Info Author, Abbreviation) is up to you. The Form Attribute is required to match the form definition.
My bad indicating the WI 1905.
But the tables are not consistent. The US1910 has the code and a Name but the WI 1905 has WI1905, USWI1905, Name. And the column names are not consistent.
I will surely try this once again and will follow up with you on this matter. Thank you Dave
Yahooo I just tried the Wisconsin 1905 and got it next I will fill this out and try the next ones. It appears that you have experience with defining forms right?

I just tried the Wisconsin 1905 and that worked the one thing I did notice is that the attribute code I used was USWI1905 and bamb it suddenly appeared. Thanks a million. By the way are you using an apple machine? The reason I ask I would put the time in to define my own forms if I could have some idea where I could start the definitions for various types. Thanks again. JNELSON
Actually, I do not use Forms. That is why I made the mistake with the 1905 Wisconsin ID.
I don’t use forms either because they use attributes. I do a lot of gedcom uploads and attributes are not included in the gedcom, so that was a non-starter for me. Just a warning.
Good morning Gary;
I just tried the 1910 Census for a family member, I discovered a couple things after fooling around;
- You must make sure the person is the home person (or at least this is the only way I found it to come up after entering the Att code)
2 after clicking OK the screen went black and crashed (I had to quit GRAMPS and start all over BUG???)
- This is what it looks like after I clicked on the person
Any thoughts?
When I tried to narrow the number of times this was entered it wanted to remove my HOME person! HMMMMM! Right?

Okay Dave as a follow up to previous post;
Can you make heads or tails of this?
This is from the 1910 census of a family member I inputted.
After I inputted all the information and clicked OK my screen went black and the program crashed. I don’t know if this is common or if there is a bug that just bit me.
I also discovered that the only way I could get the census to show in the drop down for entry of data was to make my person the HOME person another bug? Thanks JNELSON
Double-click on any of the citations and look to see what is in its References tab. What is listed in the tab will be where/what that citation is linked.
As I said, I do not use the Forms gramplet. I feel manual entry allows me total control.
Okay I have done that so I would guess the next step would be to merge these units because based on what I see half have nothing in the references tab is this correct?
I entered several censuses now and the Mac told me it had an unexpected interruption. I read through it and it is all greek to me. I have no idea what any of it means.
I know I am showing my age (75) and trying to figure out computers and probably over my head with genealogy so maybe I should try something else. What is your thought? JNELSON
Not completely following you.
When entering a Form, you should see 3 tabs> Details, Headings, Gallery. You will go to the Details tab to enter each person and their census info. You can also go to the Gallery tab and enter a media object. The Heading tab is pre-populated with the census-specific headings (attributes of the Census, not the person). You can add this info (I have never done this as I include a media of a snapshot of the census image).
If you look at the Person view, you can see the Source (specific census) and the set of citations (as you showed). You get one citation for the reference to each Person, one citation for the reference to the Census Event, and one citation for each field (like age, sex, …) of the census you completed. At least that is what it looks like to me. I never looked at this before.
I have never seen a crash. Can you open a Terminal window and start Gramps from there? That can provide a dump of a crash.
NEVER merge citations. This will completely mess up the Form. There was a discussion recently on this specific issue.
See Corruption when opening FORMS data in PEOPLE screen for discussion on Forms and Citations.
How is that Dave, manual entry! Is that something from the terminal side?
Can you copy/paste the dump info. I can try to figure out what happened. And tell me how to reproduce.
Here is what the “dump” my system told me GRAMPS had an unexpected interruption is that what you are asking about? It was all greek to me.
I did enter 4 forms using the sources as described. After each total entry after clicking ok the screen went black and I had to restart my computer. My wife thinks I have too much stuff on my computer. Did you need the error (Unexpected interruption?
