How do you enter Marriage Banns?

Good day Gary;
I have a question about marriage banns in GRAMPS are each of these individual events if not how are they entered. Thank you in advance. JNELSON

Entering Marriage Banns is a new topic that is unrelated to “Forms in General”. Moved the posting so others with the same question can search by topic title.

Marriage Banns is one of the pre-defined event types found under the Family sub-types.

Yes, add it in as a separate Event in the Family events of a Relationship. It should have the Event Role of “Family”.

You can also copy that Event to the Clipboard to drag’n’drop to other people who participated or were mentioned in the Banns. Create and/or set appropriate custom roles: officiant, clerk, father, etc. (Stay consistent with the Capitalization and naming of Custom Roles.)

Marriage Banns are an Event for the Family, not the Person. The most common way I enter this info is to go to the People view of one of the married people. With that person as the Active person, switch to the Relationships view. Then Edit Family of this relationship. You will see the Father and Mother and lower there is the Events tab. Add a new Family Event of type ‘Marriage Banns’.

Does this make sense?

Thank you I really thought it should be separate. In my situation is the banns were on 3 separate dates before marrying typically 3 weeks. JNELSON

That is traditional. (See Wikipedia’s article on Marriage Banns)

I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be entered as 3 separate events… since they would’ve been on separate dates and/or made public by different methods.

I just enter a single event and use "between [date] and [date]. Less clutter.

The way most people use so few Family Events, the clutter really isn’t much of an issue. Besides, a ‘between’ date just adds ambiguity that future researchers feel they have to resolve.

The 3 postings of banns is a fading tradition. It seems like a good historical nuance to properly document.

I do agree and I am still do a bunch of rework going very slow to make sure I enter everything just right. I have dumped families as many as 7 times because I was not familiar what it was to look like. So tomorrow I will start with just my great grandparents first because much of their information comes from church books in Norway that was the stem of the banns question. I hope I am not a pain with all of my questions. Thanks again JNELSON
