Are marriage events personal or family

GrampsAIO 5.1.6, Windows 10 latest build

When adding a marriage to Gramps should it be as a ‘Family’ event or as a ‘Personal’ one?

Marriage is one of the Events expected to be stored in a “Relationship” (rather than a person) with a Family role.

In addition to the “Marriage” event which sets a key boundary for the the Relationship, you also make the Relationship type a Marriage. (Even if the relationship end in a divorce or annulment.)

There was a GEPS (Gramps Enhancement Proposal Statement) that suggested building in structured expansions to the concepts. That structure has never been implemented but those features can be simulated with Custom Types of Events and Relationships. (The GEPS was probably about creating a predictable structure that would have encouraged new sections in Reports.)

A marriage should be a Family event.

Attaching marriage events to the bride and groom as individuals is possible, but not recommended. We briefly discussed changing this in GEPS 035: Attach family events to individuals.

Most the marriages in my system are, through ignorance, attached to individuals but today I came across one I’d unknowingly attached to a Family. Once I saw that, it dawned on me that was probably a better way of recording a marriage event, hence my question here.

Top of my ‘to do’ suddenly becomes ‘fix marriage events’

Thank you!

Mass fixes are a good reason to experiment with Supertool. (After making a backup, of course.)

Noted but after a quick look I think that’s a bit beyond my skills at the moment.

It only looks complex because all the features are exposed. You can ignore the ones you don’t need.
