Was thinking something similar… Perhaps having the colors inherited from a fan chart & numbers correspond to the ahnentafel formula?
I think the hand-drawn map is much nicer looking than anything that could be done by a computer.

You might want to try out QGIS. It is a free and open source application for geospatial data.
