Hi,
i´m on Gramps 5.2.3/Win11.
Is there any way to export a witness of marrige to a gedcom file? The Godfather export works very well, but the witness of marrige??
I assign the witness in the person view of the wedding. But this is not displayed in the gedcom export.
Is there perhaps another way to export the godparents with gedcom?
I found the problem.
In the Gramps gedcom they displayed it so:
0 @F0174@ FAM
.
.
.
.
2 ASSO @I12458@
3 TYPE INDI
3 RELA Zeuge
2 ASSO @I12817@
3 TYPE INDI
3 RELA Zeuge
It must be so:
0 @F0174@ FAM
.
.
.
.
1 ASSO @I12458@
2 TYPE INDI
2 RELA Zeuge
1 ASSO @I12817@
2 TYPE INDI
2 RELA Zeuge
Can i change this somewhere without an texteditor?
Please edit to include the Level 1 hierarchical entry in the Gramps generated GEDCOM above the cited level 2 ASSOciation line.
Note for others trying to help: the “Zeuge” in the RELAtionship is “Witness” in German.
The Gramps marriage witness GEDCOM:
0 @F0174@ FAM
⋮
1 ____ __________
2 ASSO @I12458@
3 TYPE INDI
3 RELA Zeuge
2 ASSO @I12817@
3 TYPE INDI
3 RELA Zeuge
The desired relationship witness GEDCOM:
0 @F0174@ FAM
⋮
1 ASSO @I12458@
2 TYPE INDI
2 RELA Zeuge
1 ASSO @I12817@
2 TYPE INDI
2 RELA Zeuge
I don’t think so. Level 2 is OK, because they’re associated with the marriage event, at level 1.
That’s what I was thinking when asking for the clarification.
The second sample has a Person associated with Family as a Witness. And that doesn’t makes sense.
They can Witness a Marriage Event. (Which was omitted from the Gramps GEDCOM sample.)
I’d like to understand a bit more about how these associations in Gedcom are visually represented in the interfaces of MyHeritage or FamilySearch. This information is probably just noted somewhere in the person’s cards, but connection lines are not built, right?
Does this apply to custom associations or only to Godparent and Witness?
Also, in my documents, there are witnesses for the groom and witnesses for the bride. That’s why I add these associations not to the family but to the groom and bride individually. Am I losing any functional capabilities of Gramps with this approach when I have witnesses not in family associations?
Now I have time to answer.
I made this change in gedcom so that the witnesses to the wedding are displayed on my TNG page. I haven’t found any other way.
I just exported a gedcom file from Gramps and imported it again. The witnesses to the marriage were not included. Is that possible??

Very possible.
The related plugins (the GEDCOM library, GEDCOM {5.5.1} Exporter, GEDCOM Extensions add-on Exporter, GEDCOM for Geneanet add-on Exporter, and GEDCOM {5.5.1} Importer) are all separate modules. So them staying in synchronization is … unlikely.
And since people tend to use Importers and Exporters a different times (sometime separated by years), the sync problems are often overlooked.
So when you find a problem like this, please file an Issue Report in the (MantisBT powered) bug reporting system.
Ok, i will do this now.
THX for help
I think that’s right, but I have no experience on this subject on either site. I have accounts on both, but the only lines that I have seen there are ancestral lines, and connections between spouses of course.
And further on, I have no clear image of the translation between GEDCOMs and FamilySearch, because there is no direct upload or download, in the shared tree, if that is what you are referring to here. I normally work with FamilySearch via RootsMagic, but I also use Ancestral Quest and Legacy 10, for special tasks.
For My Heritage, it would be interesting if you can create an association on site, and then download a GEDCOM from there, just to see how that translates. I have a free account there myself, and cancelled a paid one recently, because I was very annoyed by the lack of response to my reports, but I still have that free one, and the Family Tree Builder program, running in Windows, so I can help with some tests.
In a Mantis post from 2018, someone had this problem that he couldn’t import witnesses. The plug-in developer only had the export from Gramps in mind, but not the import.
Unfortunately, this hasn’t been fixed to this day.
Issue 0013390: [Addon:GEDCOM Extensions] gedcom export/import (*.GED2) all witnesses to the marriage were lost on import was closed in favor of Original feature request 0010550: Refactor Gramps GEDCOM import so as to support GEDCOM extension addons
I don’t understand what you’re trying to tell me.
Unfortunately, renaming the gedcom file extension from .ged to .gen doesn’t work.
Or do you mean renumbering the ASSO tag?
How would I have to renumber it? I can control the gedcom creation from my program.
