Importing GEDCOMs into Gramps for desktops (not Gramps Web for servers):

You need to create a new, empty tree and load it before the “Import” menu will be shown. (Menus are contextual. Options which are invalid in the current context are not ‘dimmed/greyed out’… they are omitted.)

There are several steps involved. But the quick and easy way to import a GEDCOM file is with Gramps installed but not yet running.

Simply select the GEDCOM in your Windows 10 desktop file manager. Right-click and (using the ‘open with’) open with Gramps.

This will create a new Tree, name it in the pattern of the GEDCOM file name, load the blank tree, begin the import.

One do this “open with” ONCE . Or you’ll create duplicate trees.
