Gedcom import Gedcom Import

I have asked about a way to import an EXISTING gedcom file to the software and was told that I cant do it to the online. I wasn’t trying to do it online I want to do it to the software I downloaded, Is there anyone who can read who can tell me HOW TO IMPORT MY GEDCOM? Or do I just forget it and uninstall?

Do you mean to the Gramps Web (the server-based or ‘online’) fork?

The normal process is to import anything other than the .gramps / .gpkg native XML formats into the Desktop version of Gramps. This is the main Gramps tool and is more mature than the recently created Gramps Web. It can chew on other formats without choking. Then the pre-digested data can be saved in the Gramps native format and send it to Gramps Web.

Here’s the process for importing into Gramps (desktop version)

Once you have installed Gramps (Linux, Windows or macOS desktop version) on a workstation, the easiest method is simply to start with no application running. You actually start the import from outside Gramps:
Select the GEDCOM file and right-click to show the OS context menu. Choose to OPEN the file with Gramps.

Gramps will launch, create a blank Tree with the name of the GEDCOM file and import the GEDCOM. Be patient.

Importing from within Gramps has 2 non-intuitive steps:

  • A tree has to be created using the Family Trees → Manage Family Trees… dialog
  • The newly created tree has to be loaded from within that same dialog.

Once a tree is loaded, it is ready to receive Imported data. So a new “Import…” menu item appears in the Family Trees menu
