What does a greyed out window mean?

Sometimes when Gramps spawns a window, either the parent window (or Gramps if that is the parent) greys out (like Family Tree Manager window the following screen capture after spawning an Info dialog)
(Gramps 5.2 beta and Fedora 37)

Dragging the spawned window also drags the greyed parent window.

Is this an error that needs to be reported? I think it may be because the scary messages appears in the console. (And there were a bunch of problems Paul had to tweak with the Windoze fork where layering of spawned windows allowed them to become hidden behind parent windows.) :

The grayed-out windows shows that it is not the active window. This is a function of the Theme you are using.

Afraid not.
Here’s the dimming with a couple extra windows (clipboard and an undocked Filter gramplet) after opening the Manage Family Trees dialog:

After spawing the Info, the dimming of the other windows became funky.

It took a while to isolate a pattern of failures with the Windoze fork, set up a reporting shorthand to report another instance of the same issue, then track downa and eradicate instances.

In the 5.1.3 release notes “A note on the AIO; A change was made to hopefully stop windows from
getting hidden behind others while active. Please report any issues in this area.”

But now it has been years since seeing a report of a top layer Windoze spawned dialog becoming inaccessible under other layers.

I wonder if this isn’t a similar situation where something is missing in the parent/child window spawning … but in Linux.

It is still a function of your theme. I tried it on both 5.1.5 using my custom theme and on 5.2 using the default Adwaita. Neither showed the major graying you are showing. I am on Win10.

The Manage Tree window is different than other Gramps windows. Notice that if the MT window is open, no other open window; edit, clipboard, etx., can be accessed and made the active window. The Info window opens from the MT window so shares its traits.

We’re talking about different things, I believe. (And I am likewise using Adwaita theme although on the Fedora box)

A theme issue would not generate the console errors. Nor would it group the parent and child together so that the parent window drags WITH the spawned window. (Making it impossible to look up information hidden underneath.)

It also spawns the child centered on the parent. So if the parent is full-screen, the child become undraggable.

That the Manage Family Trees dialog is a modal (rather than semi-modal or modeless) might be significant. There are not many modal dialog in Gramps. I will look for another example of this “gouping with dimmed parent” in a spawned window of a modeless parent window.

There might be a fix for the missing tile message.

See this thread from 2018 (which mentions Gramps by name) suggesting there is an upstream fix. That user was also using Fedora and this distro needed a change.

A spot where the greyed out parent window (with the spawned window pinned to its center) is the Manage Trees dialog.

In this case, I cannot move the dialog to look at the hints below.

(Fedora example. MS Window is independent of its parent other than being of a upper layer.)

Likewise when Selecting a shared Person, Event or Place, it is helpful to slide the selector to another screen to you can see the people,events or places already in the Object Editor or Relationship View.

Since other dialogs (like Object Editors) float without being pinned to their parent in Linux, the dialogs must have a different definition.

Those windows float OK for me. I’m running 5.1 on Debian (Chrome OS).

Yes. The family tree manager and object selectors are modal dialogs.

I don’t mind the dimming. It is just that the Modal Dialog is centered and locked to its parent window. The biggest problem is that I’m not familar enough with the Fedora/Gnome terminology to search effectively.

It appears that there are Gnome tweaks for this:
