Gramps 5.2.1 is stuck on Windows 10

I just uninstalled Gramps 5.2.0 from a Windows 10 laptop then installed 5.2.1-1 and created a new tree called “Blank”.

Gramps opened to the Dashboard. But has been ‘busy’ for the last hour after I clicked on the People category before doing an import test.

I suspect that it has to do with importing the gramps.ini from 5.2.0 and trying to load addon Grampslets that haven’t been installed?

Is there any way to get useful diagnostics before/while killing this instance of Gramps?

might be interesting to know if Gramps is completely idle or is doing some work?

(after killing Gramps, be sure to look on the Gramps52.log file, a path something like: C:\Users<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\grampsGramps52.log)

a question: is it possible that on the People view, you have the Prerequisites checker gramplet installed?

No. Just the Filter and Pedigree gramplets in the People sidebar. I discovered a while back that Prerequisites Checkers should have been locked down to the Dashboard category.

Here’s the 5.2.0 gramps.ini that was read by 5.2.1-1

It’s been a while but I think something like this happened to me once. I thought Gramps was busy, but there was another window hidden behind the one I was looking at, and Gramps was waiting for me to respond to it. If that was the case for you, it might have happened for example if Gramps was displaying some pop-up window just as you clicked on the People category, and so you couldn’t see it without moving the main window out of the way.

I imagine you’ve killed it by now so it’s too late, but if it happens again you could check the Task Manager (I think that’s what it’s called in Windows?) to see if Gramps is using CPU, doing I/O, etc.

There wasn’t a Windows stacked behind.

And nope, haven’t killed it. Still busy after a day. But 0% CPU activity for the Gramps task and 100Mb of memory usage. I turned off the Wi-Fi a little while ago (which was absurdly active… Windows was installed less than week ago and MS was doing all sorts of updating stuff and content delivery crap.)

Haven’t killed Gramps yet. And the %localappdata%\gramps\Gramps52.log file exists and is currently blank… as is the console.

Finally killed the stuck (not responding) Gramps. Disconnected the wi-fi last night (to stop any covert Windows updates and spam) with no difference. The CPU utilization was 0% and memory usage ws 97MB with a blank tree.

Re-started Gramps, unlocked & re-loaded the blank tree and switched to People view without problems. exited Gramps.

Then to replicate the use case, started Gramps, deleted the Blank tree, exited. Then re-started Gramps, created a new tree, named it “Blank”, loaded that tree, and switched to People view. No problems.

Then set preference to remember tree and view. Then chose the Blank tree, People view with a Custom filter in the Filter’s gramplet. Exit and re-start Gramps. No problems (except that the Custom Filter was dropped.)

Is it now normal to NOT remember the Filter between sessions? (That would probably be a good choice. Did not see the Custom filter in the gramps.ini nor the People_personview_sidebar.ini files and wondering if that is new behavior.)

About to reformat that computer and try fresh install again.

I just installed 5.2.1 in my Windows 10 running in VirtualBox, and didn’t see any problems. I had a 5.1.6 there, so it found that in AppData\Roaming, and did not create a new folder in AppData\Local.

Maybe, instead of reformatting, you can just remove the gramps folder from wherever it is in AppData. Or move it to a place where Gramps can’t find it.

Well, if upgrading from 5.1.x puts Gramps in a different place than upgrading from 5.2.1 or installing fresh, then that is REALLY going to complicate support and troubleshooting.

I’m doing a fresh install “1st ten minutes” assessment now.

Then I’ll go back and flush Windows again, install 5.1.6, then upgrade and see what happens.

I know, but you could be prepared, because the decision was implemented, so new installs will use AppData\Local. And you know that it’s even worse on Linux, don’t you?

Yeah, coming from decades of Windows experience, the Fedora file management tools feel like a squirming bag of wet, angry cats. (Sort of like modern MS Windows task management.)

Now that 5.2 is out, I’m hoping to try a different distribution (Nick seems to like Ubuntu) in the next month or so. Perhaps I will like that better.

Have to get all the data and complimentary software over to the Windows box 1st. This will give me a chance to see how moving a Media via .gpkg between different OSes works. Will probably start from scratch over a dozen times before the real switchover.

For now, I suggest that you try Mint, because plain ubuntu gives you the same desktop as Fedora. Mainstream Mint is based on ubuntu, so the installation is pretty much the same, but the Cinnnamon GUI is much better, and has the Start menu in the right place.

Moving media via .gpkg is nice if you what you’re doing, and can give you a lot of inspiration for writing good manuals. I tried it, but prefer using the cloud (MEGA) and external drives.

That’s exactly the reason. Most of my experiments are for that or testing workflows for support reasons. And for background on workflow Enhancement Requests.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did not actually install Fedora on this box and might try that install twice just to understand the process. (Have to discover what, if anything, is in the Recovery partition.) Then switch to Mint within a week. I’m flying blind on the selection. Maybe if I try a few distributions, I can experience the the differences a bit. And understand why it is worth having so many flavors.

And just FYI: I have successfully restored a backup with media made on Linux in Windows 10, with Gramps 5.1.6, where I found that the media path was set right. And the upgrade to 5.2.1 worked fine too.

Dealing with a stuck Gramps 5.2.1 on Windows 10 can be super frustrating. One thing you might wanna try is closing the program using Task Manager.

I had this problem once a long time ago, I don’t remember if it was 5.0 to 5.1 or just a clean install of one of them. But it was on a clean new installed Windows 11 (not yet used) with most of my software installed, including a version of Python 3 64bit.

I think I had installed 5.0.x from a download and found that 5.1 something was released… I don’t remember the versions now.

Problem was after a lot of monitoring of the system, I had a file monitor running because of the installations of the new software and forgot to turn it off, that when I started Gramps the first time, I opened an existing database, not a new one, there was som initialization on indexing of both some GTK file and my complete library of fonts.

I don’t remember the exact exe that initialized the indexing, but I think it was some GTK stuff.

I tried to find those log files, but I have deleted them all.

I also had to kill Gramps by the task manager, there was no activity, but the last entry in both the application monitor and the file monitor I used, stopped on logging some font files.

It only happened one time on that Windows install, and I have never reinstalled Windows after that.

Check the Windows Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application and System and see if there is some yellow or red warnings/Errors there.
