Update 5.2 > Database lost

Hi, as the title said, I’ve just installed Gramps 5.2 update and my database cannot be found by the program.

Yes, I forgot to make a backup before upgrading, and unfortunately, Iv’e made lots of changes since the last backup I did, so I wouldn’t really like to loose these changes.

It must be there, anywhere, but for the life of me, I can’t find it.

Linux Mint 21.3 here. Any help?

Thanks!

Open your file browser, find the .gramps file for your database, right-click the database, and select “Open with Gramps”. It will take a couple minutes. The 5.2 version of Gramps needs to update the database before displaying.

Are you using the flatpak version? If so, the database and media files need to be in either Documents, Downloads, or Pictures. For extra security, the flatpak can only access those directories now. A source or deb install can still access your entire home directory, so this restriction is only relevant to the flatpaks.

Hopefully, you did not un-install the 5.1.x version. (Not a major problem if you did. But easier if you did not.)

Start the old Gramps instead of the new. Go into Family Tree tab of preferences and copy the Family Tree Database path.

That is the folder you need to copy somewhere else. (You do not want 5.2 to make changes to the original if you have not made backups.)

Go back to 5.2 and set its Database Path preferences to the clone’s path.

(You should do backups while 5.1 is up too!)

If 5.1 was un-installed, the gramps 5.1 User Directory will still exist and have the gramps.ini text file that has a record of this path.

Thanks both, it took a little bit, but I was finally able to recover my old database thanks to the provided info.

I just encountered the same problem after an upgrade on Linux Mint. It was a flatpak package in system updates. I used Timeshift in Mint to restore the system to last boot, so my family trees are restored. Done a backup using XML, and will look at the options.Your upgrade information is helpful, Thanks
