I’m not a coder so I’ve no idea how hard this would be but…
Having worked with multiple monitors since the days of Windows XP, it would be nice if I could use Gramps across multiple monitors. For example, to have a text based view on one screen (People, Relationships, etc.) and a graphical view (Charts, Geography) on an other.
The closest I can get to that sort of workspace is to have Gramps on one screen and then, at regular intervals, output my tree as an Interactive Family Tree, which opens in a tab in my browser on my second monitor.
Has this sort of thing ever been considered as a feature for Gramps? If so, is it already in a road map of the (distant / v6 / v7 /v?) future? Or is it that the coding required would be such a massive job that it’s never going to happen?
And the Experimental CardViews have a “Pin copy” feature in the toolbar. However, the “Pinned” cardview windows do not ‘navigate’ their content based on the active record in the same way as the main window. Instead, they are anchored content that you can use to navigate the main window’s focus.
Before my second monitor died, I routinely used Gramps on two monitors. What cannot be done is to load multiple instances of Gramps at the same time. You cannot have the Graph View open on one monitor and the Relationships view on another. Where edit windows open can be moved between monitors.
I would have Gramps on in my main monitor and use the second to open my research material.
I’m not able to do that in Gramps (running on Linux). I can move the entire application between monitors, but not individual windows. I can do it with other apps, but not Gramps.
For Views, it is a special feature of the experimental Card View addon view modes.
However, any Gramplet can be undocked (grab the tab name and drag it onto the toolbar, menubar or application titlebar) and then repositioned.
As for Object Editors, they appear on the screen indicated by the mouse pointer. So if you use the Edit icons, have to drag to the other screen too much. So use the keybinding (listed on the Edit → Edit… menu) and save the dragging.
