Stale and outdated Gramps projects on SourceForge

There are some SourceForge projects related to Gramps that are outdated/superseded and ought to be marked as such.

The main project is the only one that is being maintained. It had a significant number of downloads this week. Some were not the current version but were probably intentional … for recovering old files or use with OS versions that are not compatible with newer releases.

But some severely outdated version projects were downloaded too.

  • Gramps Last Update: 2025-09-06; 180 downloads this week. (6.0.5, 6.0.4)
  • gramps-addons Last Update: 2019-08-15; 2 downloads this week (docs say: for v3.2 and 3.3! But 3.4, 4.0 and 4.1 are also in the Code collection)
  • gramps-cd Last Update: 2018-07-01 (zero downloads from this project. But the gramps-cdrom folder in the Gramps project had 5 downloads this week)
  • JoomlaGen Last Update: 2014-06-22
  • GRAMPS for Windows Last Update: 2013-03-20

The Gramps project on SourceForge is kept up-to-date with the latest releases. We also use it to host our mailing lists.

The gramps-addons project was used to host our addons in v3.2 and v3.3. I can still see the occasional download of the Census addon for v3.3 - otherwise it looks dead. We keep it just in case someone needs to run an old version.

I’m not sure about the status of the gramps-cd project. @dsblank or @romjerome should be able to comment on this.

The JoomlaGen and GRAMPS for Windows projects are not owned by us.

If I should be able to comment on it, then my memory is worse than I remember

I have no idea what it is, and anything that I had on SourceForge is surely outdated and moved to github, if useful.

I remember one (or two or more) updates for the live-cd (based on Ubuntu), done by myself. It was more and less what now exists with flathub, All In One for Windows OS or bundle for Mac OS. We made some open-sources applications ready for a run, session, test and installation via a live-cd. It was before Virtualization. The first version has 20 years old, the last one has 15 years old….

I agree that the need for the archives of gramps-addons project will continue.

However, since the 5.2 addition of the Addon Manager and the expansion in keys in the registration, there is a major backwards and forwards compatibility disconnect. And there’s a 4 year gap (Aug 2015 - Aug 2019) in the gramps-addons where the 4.2, 5.0, and 5.1 addons are missing.

So the top-level SourceForge page needs an explanation that this is an archive of addons for Gramps versions to 4.1.

Further, for 4.2 to 5.1, the user should use the Gramps preferences for automated installation. And the Addon Manager for Gramps 5.2 (or newer) for automated installation. And the GitHub repository (GitHub - gramps-project/addons-source: Contributed 3rd party plugins for Gramps) for manual installation.

  • v3.2 and 3.3 are in SourceForge Code and Files.
  • v3.4, 4.0 and 4.1 are in the SourceForge Code.
  • v4.2 and onwards are on GitHub.

I would expect each version of Gramps to look in the appropriate place by default.
