Registrere et uekte barn i en familie [Register an illegitimate child in a family]

Hvordan registrere et uekte barn i en familie?

Norwegian to English:
How to register an illegitimate child in a family?

Illegitimate births can be recorded in different ways in the Family Editor:

  1. Recorded date for the marriage of the parents occurs after the birthdate of the child (When there is an unknown date, use a “before” or “after” date referencing the other known date. For an illegitimate child known to born in 1920, set parent marriage date to “after 1920”)
  2. The Relationship type of the parents is set to “Unmarried

There is a thread on the Gramps for Genealogists Facebook group where @PLegoux created a filter using the SuperTool for find Persons born less than 9 months after the parents marriage date.

How a child is recorded would be determined by the circumstances.

My nephew had a son while living with the mother. They married 17 months later. Until they married I had the Family as Unmarried type but edited it to Married when they wed. The son is in the family… his birth date just happens to occur before the marriage of his parents. In today’s day and age he was never considered ‘illegitimate’.

Most instances that are considered ‘illegitimate’ births are where the father is ‘unknown’ In these cases, I create the family with [unknown] as the father with the relationship to the child as Birth. The family type would be Unmarried. Any documentation found would have the child’s surname that of the mother. Occasionally I have seen a note added by the clerk something like “John Smith presumed to be the father”.

There was a case of four children sent from England to the New World on the Mayflower landing and forming the Plimouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. Their case was researched by the New England Historic Genealogical Society and published in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register; Volume 114, 1960, pages:163-168. All four were baptized by the father but as the children grew older it became clear that the children were not his. The court and church records were searched finding the documentation that all the children were fathered by another man. The children were sent to the New World as a way to bring the embarrassment to an end.

As one of the children is an in-law to my research, I have them in the database with the two sets of parents. Their Birth father with their mother and the family Unmarried. . The second family with their mother and the man that baptized them giving them his name. The family is Married but for the relationship to the father I have as None.
