Recreated family tree from the backup data

Gramps 5.2.3
Current: Windows 11 Enterprise version OS.
Older: Windows 10 Enterprise version OS.

I created my family tree on Gramps (earlier version 4.2).
But I had not exported the data in xml or gpkg format.
I have the complete (backup + root) folder copied where created the family tree. Frankly, I don’t know what it contains.
How can I can recreate the whole family tree again in the new version of Gramps?

1st Search that folder for a grampsdb subdirectory. (If you do not have a subdirectory with that name, we’ll have to try another approach.)

Back up the folder! I would download a 4.2.8 PortableApps version of GrampsPortable and put it (plus the data file) on a USB thumb drive. Then verify the data is accessible from it. (Alway make certain you have a working backup before upgrading.
The 4.2.x preferences:

If that exists, you can point the Database path in the Family Tree tab of the 5.2 Preferences at that folder.

The Family Tree dialog should show any Trees you had created. Opening a 4.2 tree will have to convert the BSDDB database file to the 5.2 SQLite backend.

When you install Gramps 5.2.x on a new system, it will create a gramps folder inside

C:\Users\ennob\AppData\Local

or a similar folder with your name in it. This is a hidden folder, but you probably know that already, because you already have a backup from

C:\Users\ennob\AppData\Roaming

on your old system.

And if this is the case, it’s probably safe to paste a copy of the old grampsdb folder inside the new gramps folder, replacing that gramps\grampsdb. This is most likely quite safe, because when you create a new tree, Gramps creates a random folder for that inside grampsdb, so it’s likely that the folder names will not clash.

Then, when you try to load a tree on the new machine, Gramps will probably tell you that it’s old and needs to be converted. And that is quite safe too, because it always creates a ZIP file with the old contents of that same numbered folder.
