Recent Items, Recent Tags add ons

Much credit to @kku for these for these utilities, have been using them both a lot recently and depending on your work pattern are either really useful or not at all, which is fine because for me there are benefits.

Issue

Places

If recent items are scrolled (because) only 4 visible and you select item 6 the contents of the window jump back to item 1 if you have accidentally selected 7 then you do not know about it until you click OK the wrong place comes up. Could it be made to stay on the selected item.

Suggestion

Places

Could the recent items be shown in a window to the right or left of the main window (instead of on top) and limited to showing only the first 15 or 20 characters of the Name field, not all the fields, this would allow an increase in the number of displayed items.

I have now hopefully fixed the first problem (scrolling). See the latest version (0.9.9).

Moving the recent items list to the side is not so simple. The position would probably need to be configurable because different users may have different needs. Making just the number of items configurable would probably be easier. Would that be sufficient?

Hi Kari

Stopping the scrolling will be great, the rest was idle musing so don’t waste your valuable time unless you feel there might be other benefits.

I usually double the count from 6 to 12 and increase the block height a bit. 6 doesn’t seem to be enough for Places. People, Events, Citations and Sources seem to work fine with 6.

With the scrolling bug fixed, my most common difficulty is: the bottomost row tends to be so obscured by the horizontal scrollbar that it becomes difficult to click/double-click.

This is a problem in all windows in Gramps. The simplest work-around is to widen the window, so all columns are visible.

In ‘recent-items’ there is also an extra blank row at the bottom of the list. The intent is that it is then easier to access the actual last row.
