The "Recent Item" addon no longer works

It’s at a time like this that I realize that this addon is now indispensable to me!! Apparently, it’s been a while since I last entered any new data in Gramps. I’m still using Linux KDE Neon 6 and Gramps 5.2.3. I deleted the ~/.gramps/gramps52/plugins/recent-items(0.9.5) directory and then recreated it from the kku repository. I stopped and restarted Gramps, but the Recent Item pane doesn’t appear, regardless of the items. What happened?

I doubt this will help you but I’ll share my experience anyway.

I didn’t know of this addon until I read this topic, but having done it prompted me to read the original topic about it (Add a "Recent" sub-menu), and having done that, I tried to install it on my Windows Gramps v6.0.4.

GitHub is a deep mystery to me but I found the relevant folder:

and RIGHT clicked on each of the .py files and saved them to my Downloads folder. However, when I copied them to a subfolder in my Gramps plugin folder, and restarted Gramps, the addon didn’t work.

I went back to GitHub and, in turn, selected each of the .py files and used the ‘download’ raw files option. Using these versions, the addon now works.

I just reinstalled it and it works. So much the better if I introduced you to this plugin, which you’ll see will become indispensable.

Just like you, I’m having trouble understanding everything that’s going on at the Github level.

From what I understand, Recent Items is part of a collection of plugins that Kari brings to our attention. I think one way to install it manually is to go to the complete collection –> Code –>Download zip. You’ll just have to unzip everything and you’ll have the plugin in question.

Perhaps you’ll find other useful plugins.

Thanks, that’s easier than the way I did it.

That is how I download from Kari’s experimental collection too.

However, you should read the docs for these experimental plug-ins. Some of the add-on plug-ins change basic behavior in multiple places and have no interface.

(Recent Items is a good example. It modifies the behavior of every Select Object dialog in Gramps. Likewise, the Name format addon showing parenthesized Alternative surnames will cause some distress if not expected. There are a couple others.)

Indeed, Kari insists that this is a personal collection reserved for developers.

GitHub - kkujansuu/gramps: Collection of Gramps addons This is a personal collection of addons for the Gramps genealogy application (https://gramps-project.org). These are experimental in nature, and some of them are intended for developers, not end users.

So, not being one of those people, I prefer to listen to people more knowledgeable than me.

I saw that, which is why the only addon from the collection I’ve installed is this ‘recent-items’ one.
