It appears that the recent upgrade of macOS to Ventura has broken some aspects of how Gramps responds to mouse actions, possibly to do with GTK. This is bug 0012754 in the bug tracker.
So, if you are using Gramps on macOS and it isn’t working properly, it isn’t your fault. Some folk are working hard on this, so hopefully there will be a fix soon.
