Troubleshoot Gramps on Mac M1?

Hi, I’ve just started using Gramps having downloaded onto my M1 MBP. However it seems to be a bit glitchy… occasional black screens, and I seem to have to click buttons twice to get them to work. Mouse will not work in drop down menus…
Is there a specific version of the software for M1 Macs? - couldn’t see anything on the download site so downloaded the intel version… Apologies if I’ve missed something obvious…N

Let’s start by with a rundown of your software configuration. Could you install the Prerequisites Checker Add-on gramplet and post a copy’n’paste of the readout?

Gramps is written in Python with absolutely no assembly anywhere. Consequently, it should work on any platform where Python is installed. But, in order not to reinvent the wheel, it uses many “external” libraries like gtk+, cairo, pango, … You can have the list of these libraries by running the following command in a terminal

gramps -v

If some are missing, you must install them.

Back Up Your Genealogy Files.
Time to back up your genealogy files, and then test your backups!
Backup to Gramps XML You will find backup in the Family Tree menu of recent Gramps versions, otherwise use Export in the same menu but uncheck privacy options in the Exporter Assistant in order to export all data.

  • Backups can be made at any time and at least on the first day of every month, if not more often.
  • Before any upgrade it is strongly recommended to backup each of your Family Trees.
  • Test your backups by creating a new Family Tree and importing the backup.

In a terminal window, cd to the Gramps app. Then go down the Contents/MacOS folder. From there, run the gramps -v.

For instance, I have the Gramps app on my desktop

cd ~/Desktop/Gramps\ 5.1.5.app/Contents/MacOS
./Gramps -v

I have a macbook air with an M1 running Monterey OS and have no issues.

I do not have a GRAMPS_RESOURCES set. The other env are the same.

I do see that you are using en_GB and I am using en_US. But I set to GB and it made no difference.

I don’t have an Apple-silicone machine (Yet!) but…

I experience the issue of needing to click twice on my Intel Mac. In certain situations, a dialog box will open but you need to click it once for it to get ‘focus’. Then click again to do whatever it was you wanted to do in the first place. Sorry, I can’t quickly find an example of this behaviour to illustrate.

I believe that this is an inherent flaw in the GTK software that Gramps employs to power the user interface. I’ve also played with the Geany text editor and had the same sort of thing happen. Annoying but not enough that I’ve tried to report a bug, etc.
