Just to be clear. I am suggesting that both methods be supported… edit button AND sectioned table in the Names tab. Workflow would be identical to invoking the Name Editor for the Preferred Name in the Person editor.
If it is implemented one way (keeping both OR eliminating the Edit button) for Names in both the Person Editor AND the Place Editor.
Otherwise, users build a vague sense that the GUI is unpredictable. Even though repeatable.
(I suffer the same uneasy feeling when using the Add Place context menu choice in the Geography views. I expect the New Place dialog for the Crosshair Coordinates clicked. But it does something else where I haven’t grasped how it is useful.)
Just though I would open the Help page for the New Place screen because I have read a lot of help text as the learning process continues. Bothered me why I missed this “feature”.
In the text it has:
Name: the name of this place.
Invoke place name editor button opens the Place Name Editor dialog where you can add/edit additional information.
Why is the “Invoke place name editor” not the actual icon used in the screen? It would make it much clearer for a new user.
As to why see a little further up the message that mentions the section is outdated and needs a volunteer to edit the page, and the next best thing is making a suggestion here .
I know that in the place record the Alternative Names tab is renamed to just Names and that the primary name field is added to start of the list showing its dates and language information (if any).
All this is already detailed in GEPS 045: Place Model Enhancements. Unfortunately, there has been no recent work done on its implementation.
