Open more than one tree at the same time

Gramps 6 on Windows 11.

I would like to have more than one tree open. (One is my tree that I’m working with and the other one might contain useful information.) Obviously it is not supported and I can’t start more than one Gramps session. I tried the portable version but that also tells me Gramps is already running. I also tried to install in WSL/Ubuntu but Gramps does not start because of python import errors. (“Unable to load hand2 from the cursor theme”, “cannot import name ‘PluginWindows’“.)

I could install it in a VM or on another computer or install another genealogy program but I would prefer not.

How are you working with multiple trees?

install and enable WSL2 on windows, or use a Hyper-V… then you can add as many sessions you want by open new desktops, read up on how you actually can use one hyper-V file for multiple sessions…

With WSL2 you can install Linux and run the Linux version of Gramps… you can have multiple desktops with WSL too..

An easy way to get a Graphical interface for WSL instances is to use GWSL…

I think there is another discussion here about the topic, and how-to do it…

To resolve hand2 cursor issue on WSL, I used this:
sudo apt install adwaita-icon-theme-full

Another solution is documented by Mike8382 in bug report 12296.

Using WSL is a creative suggestion!

FYI, WSL 2 with GUI support (WSLg) removes the need for GWSL. All versions of Windows 11 and Windows 10 Build 19044 (21H2) and later support it.
