I will try to create a “pseudo tree” which shows the issue.
Will let you know, when this is done
I have created a small tree as an example. do you want it as a GEDCOM file, or a gramps backup?
3’rd and 4’th row is duplicated
As a mere Windows user, GitHub is black magic to me so forgive me for not checking there…
Randomly** when I select a person I see this sort of thing:
where the buttons at the bottom of the panel are truncated.
The buttons still work so, as I’m familiar with them, it’s just an inconvenience and not a problem. It will need attention eventually though, as it is likely to put off new users.
**Yes, the behaviour is truly random, I can’t find a pattern. Sometimes, but not always, selecting another person and then returning to the original selection is enough to make the box render correctly. Changing the zoom doesn’t seem to change anything either.
Also, randomly, when I click off such a truncated box by clicking on white space, i.e. not on another person, the missing bit of the box appears, like this:
I’ve noticed a (very) low priority / cosmetic problem with the expanders…
If I have collapsed the mini-map then when I use an expander on a person, the mini-map also expands. However, although the mini-map is now expanded, its expand/collapse button does not toggle, it continues to show as ‘expand’. It still behaves correctly though and clicking on it collapses the mini-map.
.gramps
and .gpkg
files can be attached to postings and PMs in this Discourse… while .ged
and .zip
files will be rejected.
@ztlxltl here is the gramps file. Thanks to Brian.

I hope this workflow will become easier once I’ve implemented the appropriate options. I’m glad you were able to create a useful output for you, despite the complex process!
What I can see in the image of your final result is that the names are always on one line which is a known issue with a workaround (increase the ppi in the experimental settings). You can try that workaround if the problem reoccurs.
There is some caching of the abbreviation to be used, but it should be reset each time this is needed. I’m not sure why you experienced this problem. If you find a way to reproduce it, please let me know.
I’m not sure right now, but I also noticed that the images are quite pixelated. This is on my list and I will make a note of the PR you linked to that might help improve the output.
@hartenthaler @kmikkels
Thank you very much for the links/files. They’ll definitely come in handy when I try to implement a better visualization for these cases.

It’s known that the info box size is not the right size in some cases. In my tests it is almost always too big (instead of too small). I’m not sure why this still happens as I’ve implemented to adjust the info box to fit it’s content. Unfortunately, I’m not sure why it doesn’t always work. It’s on my list to investigate this further.
Good catch. I’ll put it on my list!
If I pin down a pattern, I’ll be sure to let you know.
Even if the result would be a very large tree, maybe too large to be practical, is there a “expand all” way (or is it possible to add the function)?
My gramps database contains my grandparents and great-grandparents siblings and their descendants, i.e. my 2rd and 3rd cousins. But I can’t find a way to expand the diagram to show more than my parents’ siblings and their cousins. In preceding generations I can see my grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ siblings, but not their descendants.
Oh, need to add that this add-on becomes more and more impressive with each upgrade.
The Edit → Configuration options allow you to set the number of generations and sideways expansions to include each time the display regenerates.
I’m aware of that, but can’t find a way to set it to show grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ siblings’ decendants. No expanders (arrow buttons) are shown for these persons. Should I set e.g. my paternal granduncle as active, his and his siblings’ descendants show up - but then all my mother’s ancestors disappear, of course.
Attached a screenshot of my expander settings. Anything wrong there? Or are there other settings that I’ve missed?
Yes, generations is set to 15/15. Tried increasing to 20/20, no difference. And I can’t see what generations has to do with this - my great-grandparents are just three generations away from me? They (their siblings, their ancestors) show up fine. It’s their siblings’ descendants that won’t show…
My expander settings look like yours.
My paternal grandfather was one of six siblings. All his siblings, their spouses and the children and grandchildren that descend from those families are visible in FTV.
However, I don’t see the siblings of my maternal grandmother unless I make her the active person. As I understand it, that is by design but @ztlxltl can clarify.
To see, my complete, fully expanded, pedigree I use the Interactive Family Tree addon:
https://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:Interactive_Family_Tree
Thank you!
What you are experiencing is intentional. There is no room below the siblings of the “inner” grandparents (paternal mother, maternal father) because the connection of the grandparent families to your parents is below them. In fairness, the children of the grandparents’ siblings are not expandable for all grandparents.
This is similar to the descendants of other families/spouses of “inner” grandparents discussed earlier and illustrated with this screenshot:

This sounds like a bug. Can you send a screenshot of that (you can use black boxes to hide the names/dates of the people/families).
Really? It looks exactly like I’d expect it to look. Perhaps I’ve not described what I see very well.
It will take me a while to prepare a screenshot…
