Missing repository information in (some) reports

When I create a detailed person report, I see that my sources are listed as endnotes, where each source is followed by a couple of citations, listed as a., b., c., etc. That’s good.

What I don’t see however is any repository information, and I would expect to see that on the source line, either before or after the source title, and author.

And I expect them, because all local citation standards say that repository info must be included, and all QuickCheck Models on the EE site show the repository name and location, which suggests that displaying these fields is quite common, or rather a must.

I tried a couple of different reports, and none of these showed any repository info.

Am I missing something here? I checked general preferences, report specific ones, and found no way to get this information displayed.

Using Gramps version 3.4.9, 5.1.5, on Linux Mint.

I don’t see a report in the English menu’s with that name; do you mean the builtin Complete Individual Report or the addon based on it called the PersonEverything Report or another report?

For the most part, Repository information is NOT included with Citation/Source entries when published.

The Narrative Web has the option to add a Repository page but that information does not make it into the C/S.

I had a discussion about citations, etc with my local librarian. She said repository information should be added to the Source for the one of a kind unique source. Things like personal papers archived at a university library. While all/most libraries would have access to Encyclopedia Britannica, only that one library would have access to those papers. So she said the source should be something like “University Archive of Personal Papers”.

There has been discussions here? and on the email lists dealing with repository information. Whether it refers to the ultimate source of the information or where did you as the researcher get the information. I use it as where I got the information. But it many cases, I add the ultimate source as part of Author field.

Realizing everyone does this differently, just sharing my approach:

The trouble with reports and menu’s is, that their translations are often quite liberal, meaning that in my language I see the Dutch word for detailed, while the report file name, which is always in English, has the word complete in it.

Anyway, in both, the repository name is missing, and to add insult to injury, the most elaborate of the two mentioned does show the repository address. And when I add these, it’s always for unique records, that are only available in a particular location, which is exactly where all standards known to me say that the repository info should be included. And with standards I mean the ones published by our Central Bureau for Genealogy, or the QuickCheck models created by Elizabeth Shown Mills.

Please note that I’m not asking for an opinion. The standards are clear, so I’m just asking whether I might be missing an option somewhere.

Ok I see!

Look like no; as somebody has requested the builtin report be expanded to show “- “Repository Reference Note”” and others, so the option does not exist!

Same for the addon report which probably should be requested also and any other report that you believe should be enhanced?

Why are you running such an old version 3.4.9 of Gramps?

Well, two reasons:

  1. I haven’t found time to convert to the place hierarchy yet,
  2. Scrolling tree views is much smoother with GTK 2.

Yes, thank you for looking these up. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing an option before filing a bug, or enhancement proposal …

I replied by email yesterday night, from my tablet, so it was hard to quote in a proper manner.

I remember part of this, also when we discussed templates and stuff, where one fellow developer wrote that he preferred to see Ancestry as a publisher, and I’d prefer to see the NARA as a repository.

Repositories are important for me, because we have many regional archives, and the Dutch archives have a weird habit of numbering church books, and those numbers are meaningless if you don’t know the archive/repository.

Elizabeth Shown Mills has examples that can be downloaded here:

https://www.evidenceexplained.com/content/sample-quickcheck-models

And in these, you can see that she tends to leave out the repository for online databases, like in #254, and does include it for church books, like in #311. And interestingly, in other examples she thinks of the NARA as a publisher.

Currently, Gramps does not include Repository information when printing Source/Citation records. So the two options are to file a feature request so that will occur. The problem is that it may take a while (or never) to occur.

Or, take the fields of the Source and Citation records to include the necessary repository information as I and @GeorgeWilmes have put forth.

No one way is correct or wrong. There are as many ways to create citations as there are Gramps users. Keeping the mantra… “Am I providing enough information in the Source/Citation for other people (as well as myself) to find the same information.” Which is the ultimate goal.

OK, right. I may file a feature request later, knowing that people have workarounds, like adding the repository to the author field. And a short test with some Windows programs revealed that many don’t show the repository info indeed, and I think that’s weird, considering that the standards are quite consistent for unique sources.

But knowing that, there is no easy way out for me, yet.

Same things from Gramps, Geneanet and a Gramps Report.

What would be nice is that the reports have named fields (example: %rt for repository name, …, %st for source title, %sa for source author, …, %cp for citation page, etc.) for repositories, sources and citations that can be arranged as desired, as is done with other fields in some reports

@ennoborg I think it comes from this Gramps module: gramps/gen/plug/report/endnotes.py
There is no mention of repository or media type or identifier in the repository in it:

def _format_source_text(source, elocale):
    if not source: return ""

    trans_text = elocale.translation.gettext
    # trans_text is a defined keyword (see po/update_po.py, po/genpot.sh)

    src_txt = ""

    if source.get_author():
        src_txt += source.get_author()

    if source.get_title():
        if src_txt:
            # translators: needed for Arabic, ignore otherwise
            src_txt += trans_text(', ')
        # translators: used in French+Russian, ignore otherwise
        src_txt += trans_text('"%s"') % source.get_title()

    if source.get_publication_info():
        if src_txt:
            # translators: needed for Arabic, ignore otherwise
            src_txt += trans_text(', ')
        src_txt += source.get_publication_info()

    if source.get_abbreviation():
        if src_txt:
            # translators: needed for Arabic, ignore otherwise
            src_txt += trans_text(', ')
        src_txt += "(%s)" % source.get_abbreviation()

    return src_txt

Missing information could probably be added without too much difficulty. I might try to add these fields

Hello Patrice,

Thank you, I found that code fragment too, and if you add code, I will be happy to backport it to my 3.4.9 branch.

There is a real bug in the PersonEverything report, in add-ons. In that, the ID and the type of the repository are shown, and the full address, but the name is missing:

And that is an error that made it all the way from 3.4 to 5.2 …
