Migration problems particularly with media path

Gramps 6.0.8 running on Linux Ubuntu 22.04

I’ve migrated a ged file successfully but am having trouble inking media files to events

Going to “Edit - Preferences and Family tree tab” I can edit the “Base Media Path” using the button on the right. After navigating the following windows I get the correct display in the Base-Media_path window eg /home/user/Pictures/Ancestry

I then exit preferences and try to access a media and get the message

External program cannot acce file at /home/user/Pictures/Ancestry/Pictures

I have tried many variations of media path without any success even to creating a path that the external proggy is looking for.
Should I assume that Gramps on Linux Ubuntu is currently a no go

I am not a Linux person (Win10) but let’s see if I can help you.

I assume your media folder allows you full access to add, delete, edit etc. But it is never a bad idea to check.

In Gramps, the Base media path set in Preferences plus the Path in the media record, when combined, should be the full path for the image on the hard drive. My base path is c:\Users\dave\Genealogy\Media leaving the media record as Photos\relative.jpg. Possibly, you have too much of the path also stored in the media record.

There is the Media Manager tool (menu >> Tools >> Utilities) that will allow you to manipulate the stored path field. Using the Replace substrings in the path option you can enter any superfluous information. Leaving the With field blank will delete the Replace entry.

As you enter new media records, there is a check box Convert to a relative path that will strip the base path set in Preferences from future media records.

Thanks for the reply, it took a while for the penny to drop hence the delay

I quickly found the “media Path” under Person-edit preferences and thought that was it but the left and Media tab also has a media path and as you so rightly say both these make the final media path.

Confusing to the elderly newbie :slightly_smiling_face:
