Does anyone here have a good method for linking multiple places to a single event?
I’m trying to document the movement of people between different farms, villages, cottages etc. and it would be very useful to be able to store the information “John Doe moved from Regent Street to Trafalgar Square in 1823 together with Jane and their four children.” with the event visible both from Regent Street and Trafalgar Square.
This feature would also be useful when documenting land reforms, where land that used to be shared between the villagers was split up into separate properties.
Given how locations are displayed in the GUI and the fact that places are referenced through a column in the event table, rather than through the reference table, I don’t see any simple solution to my problem. My current method is to use a “Residence” event linked to the place where the family ended up and then just a text note to specify where they moved from.
Any suggestions for a better way of doing this would be much appreciated.
No, two place records cannot be added to the same event record. The best you can do is to have a series of Residence records where the person lived. Each of these could/should have their date be ‘from <date 1> to <date 2>’ with the next record ‘from <date 2> to <date 3>’, etc.
These Residence records can be shared between John Doe, his wife Jane and the 4 children. Add the record to the father’s record. His role will be Primary. Copy this event from the father onto the clipboard (drag-n-drop). Then edit the wife’s record and drop the event from the clipboard into her record. Make her role for the event Wife. Do the same for the children making their role Son or Daughter.
An alternative is to use the Address tab in each person’s edit window. You can put the address information with the span of time into a series of records. These records can be shared between all family members. But these are not like an event record. The place information does not utilize the Place database. Each family member can have their own date information. When a child goes and gets married their Address records can diverge from the parents while the parents stay in the family’s home.
There is the addon House Timeline Gramplet which will aggregate information from everyone’s Address tab to display who was living at each address and when.
