Is there a way to prevent duplicate persons when importing two overlapping family trees?
No. You will have to merge duplicates after import.
Do you have an idea about the size of the overlap? If you merge trees, you may already know that they have particular persons in common, and sometimes it helps to reduce the overlap by removinng branches, or doing a selective export via a temporary ‘work’ tree.
Note that you will also get duplicate locations, so they need to be merged too.
