How can I import GEDCOM-Files?

Step one is to create a database that will take the GEDCOM import.

  • Click the Manage Databases icon
    ManageDatabases-icon-toolbar-51

  • Click a) New b) Rename c) Load Family Tree

Now that you have a loaded family tree, the Import options will be available.

  • Go to menu Family Trees >> Import

  • After acknowledging there is no Undo option, a file selector will allow you to navigate to your OS files to select your GEDCOM file.

There is a Preferences item you MAY want to change before importing your GEDCOM.

If your GEDCOM does not have a source for every record, you may want to mark all this data as coming from that GEDCOM file.

This ‘source’ identifier will not be very helpful in the present. But in a couple years, you will not remember which records came from fresh research.

Select the “Add default source on GEDCOM import” option in the General tab of Edit : Preferences.

Note: there are many dialects of GEDCOM. Many programs use custom tags if GEDCOM cannot support all their feature requirements. See the “Import from another genealogy program” wiki article for notes about handling the GEDCOM variations exported by different genealogy programs.
