This may be a bug.
We tried to add the parents of a person (who is already a grandfather in the db) .
After adding the father and mother, the person also shows up as their own child.
The screenshots show the person before and after adding the parents.
My wife is trying to do this and it’s driving her nuts. There seems to be no obvious way to just delete the child entry except for the minus button labeled “delete this person as a child of this person”
When you do that, it erases everything about the person’s parents as well as the child line.
Please help!
You have Albert C McKinney as a child in 2 families. The first has no parents. Then I assume you chose to ADD McKinney as a child to a new family.
What you should have done was to EDIT the first family and then add the parents to that family. When editing a family, you can add an existing person or add a totally new parent to the database.
FYI: if you do not have addons in the Sidebar or Bottombar, you can disable them in the view. menu >> View.
Looking at your post, I am afraid you may be adding several families each having the same set of parents.
You show you are using the Relationships view. I use it as my main view. One thing you need to remember about the view is that it works off of the ACTIVE person. It will show that person’s Parents with the active person as a child and possible siblings. And yes, the active person can have more than one set of parents, i.e. adoption, etc.
It will also show the Families that the active person is one of the spouses with any possible children.
Change the Active person and the view displays their information.
The parents disappeared because removing the active person as a child of that family, that family no longer has a relationship to the active person. But that family still exists, just not with that particular person as a child. With your attempts, I am afraid you may have created multiples of the same family.
I like using the Family view myself. It is less busy.
However you could still have multiple family records with the same person in as a child.
You can also see the relationships in the Charts view.
Many ways to do things in GRAMPS.
