"Unknown" People - Retain or Delete?

Gramps 5.2.3 Win 11

Are there any benefits to adding spouses as People who have entirely unknown given names and surnames (i.e., Unknown Unknown), and no other Dates or Places? I wish to delete, but checking here before I dump them.

The existence or non-existence of a parent does make a difference in the behavior of certain filter rules. I don’t have the particular examples handy, but I recall cases where I needed to add (or remove) such people in order to get my custom filters to work as desired.

I don’t think so, unless you need them, because they connect to other people that you do know more about. This means that I remove most of them, except in the situations that you mentioned.

I try to avoid using names like unknown, or ‘onbekend’ in my language, because that’s not really their name, and it’s a problem when I exchange data with relatives in other countries.

I will add an [unknown] entry such as an in-law.

Old records may be something like John Smith married Jane the daughter of William Smith. Obviously, Jane had a mother which at this time is [unknown].

One reason I add it at the same time is to have their Gramp ID’s in sync. Plus, it makes a great visual clue that the record is missing information more so than the clue William Smith is missing a wife.

Similarly, if you need to link a person with a known relationship to an unnamed relative:

  • John Smith’s sister-in-law was Mrs. Frank Jones
  • Samuel Thompson’s nephew, Mark Thompson.

I do enter a record when all I know is the first name like Jane unknown when they are found on Baptism or other records. I don’t think I have needed to add unknown unknown because if I don’t know who the person is how would I know the names for the next generation.
