Adding Location of photo

I have found a photo of a group of people that are all in my research. I have added (sharing) the photo in the gallery of those people. By chance I have found out where the photo was taken (there is a building on it, a hostel) It seems there is no way I can add the precise location of the photo through the media-reference. The only way I see it is adding an event (it was a family reunion), with the location and the photo in it, then sharing that with all (30 times). It feels like doing something double. Any thoughts?

It depends on how you share your tree with other relatives.

If you use the Narrative or Dynamic Web, you can add a Note to the media record with the name of the location and date etc. You can select the name then use the Link Editor to link the name to the place record.

This link within Gramps will open the place’s edit window. But in the web reports the link will take the user to the place’s web page. If you do not use these reports, the link in the record’s note will have limited value to your relatives.

Creating the Reunion event with the Date, Place and Photo would be a desirable endeavor. Remember, sharing an event with many people is made easier if after creating the event for the first person, you can drag it to the Gramps clipboard, then drag it into each person’s record. Just remember to set the Role. Drag-n-Drop defaults the role to “Unknown”.

In my case I do not share this research with any relatives (they are far from being interested) I did create the event with all info I have and then took the time to share it with all 35 persons on the photo.

Since you recognized the location by the buildings you could create a citation from a source that identifies those buildings with a geolocation, and link that citation to that media as you would to provide evidence for an event. Optionally, you could create an attribute named Location associated with this media to attach this citation to it and thus qualify it better than by simply attaching it to the media itself. And so you could have a place with a Building place type associated with those coordinates to which you could also associate that citation and that media
