A report that combined people and places

Hello,

Is there a report available that "kind of connect’ people and places in the database?

I have no precise idea (yet) how this report could/should look like, however the basic idea is to connect people and places, Perhaps list (all or selected ) people with the places attached to them in alphabetical order.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Have you looked at:
Reports | Text reports | Place Report

@stuck It looks that this report could be useful.

It just would be nice to have an additional option to include all the place in the database and not just the selected ones.

Thanks for the tip.

You can!!

In the Report Options you can Select using filter or the Select places individually.

You can select places using the All Places filter or construct your own. A handy rule for reports like this is the Places enclosed by another place. You can set the ID for a country or a state for a more manageable list.

Wow. I didn’t know anything about this feature. I saw actually the filter field but since it was empty, I didn’t pay any further attention to it.
I looked it up and found some info’s at Wikitree-filters but still don’t know how to start.
Are there perhaps some examples somewhere that I could look at to get a head start with the filtering?

That would be nice.

Thanks

Custom Filters is always a good place to start. And doing a search here for ‘filters’ or ‘custom filters’ will point to various threads.

In the sidebar Filter gramplet, if you enter various parameters, then use the Define Filter option, it will create a custom filter with those parameters. This will demonstrate what goes into a custom filter.

And once written, you can use them again and again.

It had been a long while since I had used the Place Report so I did some testing.

The First filter I used for the report was…

Selected Place
Places enclosed by another place; ID:="P000280"Inclusive:="1"

One flaw was that if one of the enclosed by places did not have an event, only part of the enclosed by hierarchy, the place was printed with no people or events.

So, I went to the Events list and created a filter there…

Events by Selected Place
Events of places matching the <place filter>; Place filter name:="Selected Place"

Then back to Places and a new filter…

Place Report Filter
Places of events matching the <event filter>; Event filter name:="Events by selected Place"

It is this last filter that you select in the report.

Only the places with events are included in the report.

This is a good automation workflow to learn how the Filter gramplet fields relate to custom filter Rules.

Another good automation is to select a few rows (of the same object type) on the Clipboard and use the right-click context menu to “Create Filter from the <object> selected…

And if you are going to Explore in the Custom Filters, the FitlerParams addon Isotammi tool really helps in understanding the dependencies and interactions. e.g., here is a 3 stage custom filter. It filters for People who had events that took place in a set of locations. (Those locations are any place(s) enclosed by a particular region.)

Have you looked at the NarrativeWeb report (created by Reports>Web Pages>Narrative Web Site)? It offers place-dedicated pages with a list of all related events and people.

You can navigate through this report even if you don’t create a web server on your computer. The report is kept in a directory. With your web browser, use the “open file” menu, navigate to the directory and open the index.html file. From there on, you can explore your tree and see what the place pages contain.

Did you try the references gramplet for places in gramps ?

@SNoiraud I looked it up in the add-on manager but it wasn’t listed there.

Gramps v6.0.7 (flatpak) on Linux

I think that what @SNoiraud means is…

If you select the ‘Places’ category, then select a place, do you have a ‘References’ tab in the bottom Gramplet panel?

This is a standard gramplet. I think it is not in the addon manager.

The References gramplet for Places is a built-in gramplet, not an addon.

I searched in the Plugin Manager Enhanced (after selecting the Show Built-in items) to find it.

And to add it:

Yes the reference tab is populated with data.

I got it working. Thanks for teh tip.

I am amazed abut all the features and addons in Gramps. A lot to learn.

Cheers
