What steps do you recommend?
Make a 3.4 backup … including media. (Here’s a link to the user guide for that version.)
Install the v5.1.6 PortableApps version of Gramps on an empty thumbdrive.
Open the portable Gramps version on the thumbdrive.
Create a new tree
Import the backup archive file.
This will probably be a slow process. (Lots of drive activity limited by the speed of your thumbrive’s USB interface.)
But… it verifies that you have a good backup of the Tree AND media files without messing with your functional setup.
Make a backup without media, and let Portable Apps update Gramps. The new Gramps version will probably offer to update the database on its own.
If it does nor, create a new tree, and import the backup in that. It will automatically find the media, if you left that in its original location.
Backups with media are a big waste of time, and restore media in a place where you don’t want it anyway.
