Gramps v5.1.5 from 1 Windows 10 PC and 1 iOS laptop (with backend in the cloud)
The first thing I noticed was 3 instances of the same tag which I thought a little weird but I deleted two to return to normal. Then I noticed many triplicated Locations and Events where two of each set have nothing entered under References.
I’ve concluded that I need to delete the records without references, but I’m concerned that I don’t know how it could have happened and therefore it might happen again.
Is there anything other than importing that could have caused this?
And if it was caused by importing, how is it prevented?
Importing to an active DB will create duplicates as there are no tools to merge an import.
Merging data has been discussed at length on this forum. There just isn’t a good way to do it.
Any new entries will have to be manually entered.
I suggest you merge duplicate items instead of deleting them. It is a safer route.
Triplicated identical Tags shouldn’t even happen with repeated Import.
First things first… do you have Gramps set to do backups on exit or automated backup?
If so, you need to tag your backups around the symptoms. And you need to do a backup… NOW! Do not experiment further with repairs without a well-defined restore point.
Then rename this Tree file with a ‘Triplicated’ identifier. Create a new blank Trees and import backup files, working backwards until you find where things went off the rails. Keep careful notes.
