What is the most effective way to add a census event to a family tree?
By convention, I have added census events to Gramps by:
- Creating one citation for the household included in the relevant census; e.g. the England & Wales 1911 census,
- Creating one census event for all the members of the household, then adding each member as a participant to the event.
But I have always wondered, βIs there a better way to do this?β Let me know if you have any better suggestions below.
I do it like yourself. I can drag and drop it to each of the persons or use the clipboard. However if the citation includes the page and line number that process does not work. Then they are all individually entered.
I was using the method of individual census records when the records were by individual lines. But with 5.2 events that are shared can now have an individual citation added next to the role setting. So a shared census can now have a shared family citation as well as an individual citation. I am now converting individual census records to shared events. The same for twin births where each child can have an individual citation in the shared event.
I manually enter the record with a reliance on the clipboard. I do not use the Forms gramplet.
I would argue that the forms gramplet is the most effective way of entering census data. It has the advantage of being able to see the data in context. As an individual person event it is meaningless. Unfortunately, reporting of participants in a shared event is poorly supported, but at least the original data entry form can be recalled to view on screen.
If you want to record all the information contained in the census as attributes, then Forms save time. @RenTheRoot is in the process of enhancing this functionality.
