(Please include your Gramps version and Operating System)

When you request help here on the Discourse community support forum for the Gramps genealogy suite of software, the following prompt will appear:

(Please include your Gramps version and Operating System)

The Gramps version and Operating System (OS) can be found in the About dialog.

It is opened from the Help ‐> About menu option.

If your issue is related to an Add-on plug-in, you may be asked about the version of the add-on or (if appropriate) whether certain prerequisites are installed. In 5.2 and newer, this information is available in the Addon Manager. In earlier versions, you might need to use the Prerequisites Checker addon gramplet.

After requesting a workflow about finding similar information in GrampsWeb, thought maybe we should add something explicit for novice users of Gramp for desktops.

Note that before the advent of Gramps Web in 2023, “Gramps for desktops” was simply “Gramps”.

Would it be possible to add a “copy” button there which would copy all the info needed to go into a post, to the system clipboard. I know this is trivial but it would create a standard to help answering the post.

A context menu already exists in the About dialog with “Select All” and “Copy” options.

The dialog already has a bit of clutter with “About”, “Credits” and “License” buttons (that act like tabs) in Linux. And “Credits”, “License”, and “Close” buttons in Windows.

I’m not certain a Button would help much. Because this would create a button that does not appear to DO anything. It could copy the data to the Clipboard. (That is an action which is “silent”. No feedback in the GUI.) But then what? It could not reliably create a Discourse posting because that requires the user to have an account and be logged in. The same with the MantisBT issue reporter.

I suppose that it could do a “Mailto:” and put the data in the body with a pre-defined subject. Or even include links to Discourse, MantisBT, and/or the User Maillist. But that would probably amplify confusion.
