People / Relationships / Charts categories are linked, but Families is not

Hi.

It seems that People, Relationships and Charts views are interconnected; what I mean is that if I select “Person X” from the “People” view, and then click on “Relationships” or “Charts”, “Person X” is automatically selected in the new view, which is quick, easy and intuitive.

However it seems that this behavior doesn’t work with “Families” and other tabs, so if I’m working with a person on the “People” category and want to edit his / her family, I need to click on “Relationships” first, and then on “Edit parents” (which other that not being really intuitive, is much slower) or just click on the “families” category and search for the related family using filters or reordering the columns.

Is there a way (even an addon) to link all categories, facilitating the workflow?

These are all using the same People database to build the different views of the same information.

Currently No!

The new experimental Card View will make the different database components active as it switches between the different card views.

If you have the Clipboard open, you can ease the process by making another item the active record.

An example: in the Relationship view, you want one of the Family records active in the Families view. Drag the family to the clipboard (click of the Family ID to drag it). Once it is on the clipboard, you can right- click to make it active. When you open the Families view, that record will be the active record. It works for all components of the database except Media.

Media has its own method. Right-click any Media object in any Gallery tab to make that record active. Then moving to the Media view that record will be the active record.

Some views do not allow dragging record from the view to the clipboard. From the Pedigree view, you can drag a person but you cannot drag a family.

Thanks for answering, very useful info and hints.

Gramps has a reputation for being a difficult and counter-intuitive program for beginners. As a new user, I think this kind of an unfair statement; while it is true that it may not be the most immediately intuitive program in the world, if you take the time and effort necessary to understand its internal logic, you’ll soon realize its enormous flexibility and how well, in fact, the program is designed.

However, also IMO, there’s is still a lot of room for improvement in this area. Linking the different modules and making the options on them more consistent would definitely improve the ease of use and, at the end, the user experience.
