Install from source

Gramps is brilliant - thank you to all who help. I’ve been using it for around 10 years on Ubuntu & Xubuntu. I am a heavy user of the Narrated Web report when I’m researching. In my mind researching is one task; recording / data entry is another.

I always install using the .deb file as I find that most reliable (to date). I recently tried install from source but found the wiki and the discourse threads were confusing so didn’t want to mess up my system.

Example: when a python module is necessary or recommended, is it best to install via “apt install xxx” or pip?

Thank you once again for a great system.

Good question, and the answer is, that it depends. I know that, because yesterday I tried to solve some dependencies of the PostgreSQL add-on. And for that, pip3 was not enough.

And the reason behind that seems to be, that when a Python module depends on a system library, meaning one that lives outside the Python realm, pip3 can not install that library, while apt can.
