Improving fan-chart clarity

Take a look at these random fan charts below.

When I compare Gramps fan chart with those produced by genealogy portals Ancestry.com and FamilySearch, I would say the latter are much clearer, even though they are less flexible in production (at least those of the Ancestry free account). I suspect that two currently absent features might help Gramps in catching up, i.e:

  1. regulating not only the type of the font but also its size (mainly in order to include the whole name and surname, which are for most distant generations just cut in half or even less)

and

  1. including years of life.

This of course not only relates to half-circles, but to full circles and quadrants as well.

So is this possible to add these two features?

Also, on Ubuntu Gramps 6.0.8 I am not able to see any changes in how the fonts present after I (nominally) change the font type, e.g. after switching from times new roman to comic sans, I see no difference, i.e. Gramps doesn’t react in any way to me “changing” (in fact just clicking on the name) the font. By the way, the mere process of scrolling through the long list of font names takes ages, as there’s no any quick-scroll or search option.

Is there any way to improve on all this?
