Hi guys, I made an account to ask this question. My grandfather was adopted as an adult (after he married) by an older man, who was single at the time. He (my grandfather) changed his surname to the adopter’s, and was considered his “son” - however, the man that adopted him did not have a partner or spouse at the time, meaning that he was the adoptive son of a man with no wife.
How would i represent this in Gramps? I know I can represent multiple names and the belongings to multiple families, but is there any way to show the absence of a ‘partner’ for famillial relationships, without filling in the spouse slot with some placeholder?
Welcome!
Create a second family with your grandfather as a child and the adoptor as the single parent. Set your grandfather’s relationship to Adopted in the children’s tab of the family. Leave the mother slot empty. Use the Family type as Unmarried or add the custom type as None.
Create an additional name for your grandfather in the Names tab giving him his adoptive name. Use the name type Legal and add the date of the adoption. Consider which name is to be set in the Preferred Name slot. You can right-click on the name in the tab list to move the new name into the preferred slot. The preferred name is the primary name for reports and sorting. A source/citation can be added to the new name.
Additionally, add an adoption event and share it with both people. And again, the event should have the citation.
Thanks for the advice! This is very helpful
