How do I add a historical map service?

Hi,
Is there any easy way to add historical map service as linked below?
Or should I start coding the *ini file?
Or is it impossible?
Thank you,
Mark

maps.arcanum.com (Arcanum Maps) is a commercial website operated by Arcanum Adatbázis Kft, a Hungarian company that specializes in digitizing and publishing historical archives, maps, and documents. The site itself offers free basic access to view many maps interactively, but high-resolution downloads, extended datasets, and some specialized map collections require a paid subscription or institutional license.

However, Arcanum Maps does not provide a public API for direct integration or programmatic access. While the company has technical experience with APIs and digital archives (for example, using AWS Rekognition for Arcanum Digitheca ), there is no mention of a JSON or REST-based public interface for the mapping site specifically. In contrast, the related Mapire project originally built by Arcanum does expose maps through georeferenced web services embedded in tools like Google Maps, Google Earth, or OpenStreetMap.

So it is not a candidate for being added as a mapping service addon plug-in for Gramps

However, you might contact them about making a Gramps addon for their customers.

The only requirement is that they share their Gramps addon publicly. A plug-in can require that user enter credentials (e.g., host, account, password) for logging into commercial services. So this is not suggesting that they exempt Gramps from needing to subscribe.

Yes, it is. But the reaching the historical maps (former mapire.eu?) are free for all without any credentials so my idea was about using it as like the Google map or others. (could we use the Google or other relief map too?)

A mapping service addon exists for Google Earth (with a prerequisite of having Google Earth Pro installed)

Several mapping service choices include relief maps. There are more than 3 so I couldn’t remember the appearance of each
So I added thumbnails to the wiki sction : “How to change the map provider ?

If the map service provides an open API then this should be possible. In the past we had a Stamen maps option, but this has been removed. Adding a new map may require a small amount of coding to re-enable some old functionality.

Stamen maps announced termination of access to their maps starting 28 July 2023. (The traffic to their servers was costing more than they could afford.) Accordingly, the option was removed in the Gramps 5.2 release.

It appears that they are back.
